The Department of Architecture, BSMRSTU was established in 2018 under the Faculty of Engineering and since then the department educates its students in accordance with the shifting demands of contemporary society. The department endeavors to foster design education, research, and innovation capable of rendering imagined spaces on the socio-economic and cultural landscape of Bangladesh sensitively,

responsibly and with critical eye toward global phenomena. The school signifies itself due to its commitment to the principles of the creative process and its grounding in the socio-cultural context that offers the learners depth and purpose. Local experiences of designing for changing society in a transforming landscape are adjacent to global advancements in knowledge and practice taking place within the allied fields of architecture. The school stays true to its credo of simplicity and practicality while offering access to materials, cutting-edge technology, a dedicated architectural library and workshop, and the highly qualified educators to manage the studios and develop the philosophical foundation of the discipline. Consequently, the carefully choreographed journey through experimentation and self-discovery inherent in architectural education is punctuated here with study tours, lectures and seminars with experienced practitioners, workshops and hands-on experiences to connect the students to the ground realities.

The Department of Architecture at Gopalganj Science and Technology University (GSTU) successfully organized a two-day academic workshop and knowledge-sharing program on 15–16 May 2026, centered around “Urban Theory” and contemporary urban discourse. The event featured special classes for fourth-year students, interactive seminar sessions for all the students of the department, and a city walk where students, architects, and urban planning experts collectively explored and analyzed the urban fabric and public spaces of Gopalganj city.

The program was enriched by the participation of distinguished architects and urban planning professionals, including Dr. Khurshid Jabin Hossain Toufiq, former Director of the Urban Development Directorate; Aga Khan Award-winning architect Ar. Khandkar Hasibul Kabir, Principal Architect of Co Creation Architects; Ar. Naim Ahmed Kibria, Principal Architect of Indigenous; and Planner Mostafa Atikul Majid of Vitti Sthapati Brindo Ltd. Planner Tasfin Aziz from BRAC University also joined the program as a special guest.

The Knowledge Sharing Seminar was honored by the presence of the Honorable Vice Chancellor of GSTU, Professor Dr. Hossain Uddin Shekhar, and the Honorable Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Md. Sohel Hasan, whose encouraging remarks inspired the students and participants.

Through lectures, discussions, workshops, and the city walk, the program created a vibrant platform for exchanging ideas, professional experiences, and contemporary perspectives on urbanism and architecture. The Department of Architecture believes that such initiatives play a significant role in enriching students’ academic understanding, critical thinking, and professional outlook.

The Department of Architecture, GSTU is proud to share a remarkable achievement of our students in an international architectural design competition organized by Claymire.

The project, titled “Sole & Soul of the City”, was developed based on the concept “Whispers of the City.” The design explored a compact yet meaningful living environment for a shoemaker within a 10-meter cube space, while also incorporating a tea stall to encourage public engagement, social interaction, and community connection.

Claymire encourages participants to transform raw concepts into meaningful and impactful designs. The competition brought together more than 1000 participants from over 30 countries around the world. We are delighted to announce that our students’ project has been shortlisted among the Top 30 entries.

The department extends its heartfelt congratulations to the participating students and wishes them continued success in their future academic and professional endeavors.

The Department of Architecture at GSTU successfully held its 5th Year 1st Term Jury (2018-19 session) where students presented their design studio project titled “Vertical Urban Dwelling: Redefining Domestic Life in Dense Urban Fabric”. The studio explored the challenges and possibilities of contemporary apartment living through the design of purely residential developments on three distinct urban sites.

We were honored by the presence of Ar. Asif M. Ahsanul Haq, Principal Architect of Venna Architects, whose insightful observations and professional guidance on residence design and critical thinkings on vertical dwelling developments enriched the session. His expertise provided our students with valuable perspectives on design practice and architectural innovation.

The jury session reflected the creativity, dedication, and critical thinking of the students as they responded to issues of density, domesticity, climate responsiveness, spatial quality, and urban living within rapidly transforming urban contexts.
