Carlo Lorenzini, better known by his pen name Carlo Collodi, was born in Florence in 1826 and has remained one of the most widely read and beloved authors of children’s literature thanks to his fantasy novel The Adventures of Pinocchio (1883).

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Collodi’s birth, Casa Italiana and .new_york are coming together for two days dedicated to Pinocchio—from the cultural history of Collodi’s beloved character to two very different cinematic visions of his journey.

A panel discussion moderated by Vanessa Roghi, featuring Larry Wolff, Perri Klass, David Forgacs, and Giulia Silvia Ghia, who will explore Pinocchio through the perspectives of cultural history, childhood, education, medicine, and visual culture.

From Collodi’s pages to two radically different cinematic interpretations, these events invite us to look again at a story we think we know—and discover how much more Pinocchio still has to tell us.

A New Chapter for Casa Italiana.

For thirty-five years, Casa Italiana has been much more than a building. It has been a place where friendships were born, ideas were exchanged, students found inspiration, artists shared their work, and generations of people came together through a love of Italian culture.

Now, for the first time since opening its doors in 1990, Casa is preparing for an important new chapter.

This fall, we will begin a major renovation to preserve and renew the spaces that have welcomed our community for over three decades. While this transformation is underway, Casa's gallery and auditorium will be closed for most public activities for much of the fall. However, we will continue to offer a number of smaller events in our Library.

This renovation comes at an especially meaningful moment as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of our founder, Baroness Mariuccia Zerilli-Marimò. Her vision created a home for Italian culture in New York that continues to inspire us every day. We hope this project will honor her legacy while ensuring that Casa remains a vibrant meeting place for generations to come.

If Casa has ever inspired you, welcomed you, or made you feel at home, we invite you to help write its next chapter. You can dedicate a seat in our renovated auditorium or make a tax-deductible gift of any amount. 🇮🇹 Una novità per chi ama l'italiano e per chi vuole scoprire una New York diversa.

Da oggi tutti gli episodi di Nuova York. Hidden in Plain Sight sono disponibili anche con i sottotitoli in italiano.

Se l'italiano è la tua lingua madre, potrai seguire ancora più facilmente ogni dettaglio di queste storie. Se invece stai imparando l'italiano, o desideri rispolverarlo, i sottotitoli rendono la serie uno strumento ideale per esercitare ascolto, comprensione e vocabolario.

Come ha scritto nel magazine Icon il nostro direttore, Stefano Albertini, Nuova York nasce dal desiderio di imparare a guardare New York con occhi nuovi. Dopo oltre trent'anni in città, ha iniziato a notare quella "mappa parallela" fatta di nomi, monumenti, iscrizioni e storie italiane che erano sempre state lì, spesso nascoste in piena vista.

As Casa Italiana's director, Stefano Albertini, writes, Nuova York grew out of a simple realization: after more than three decades in New York, he began to notice a "parallel map" of the city—one made of Italian names, monuments, inscriptions, and stories that had always been there, often hidden in plain sight.

That is the invitation of the series: to look at New York differently, uncovering the Italian traces woven into the city's history and discovering what they still have to tell us today.

Many of you may remember that we closed our last season with a special conversation featuring filmmaker Carolina Cavalli. Now, we invite our community to continue discovering her work on the big screen.

Carolina Cavalli's latest feature, The Kidnapping of Arabella, opens at IFC Center on July 17. Starring Benedetta Porcaroli—winner of the Best Actress Award at the Venice Film Festival for her performance in the film and known to many for her role in the series Baby—and Chris Pine in a rare Italian-language role, the film is a witty, imaginative, and moving story about a young woman who befriends an eight-year-old girl she believes to be her younger self, sent back to influence her future.
