It is our great pleasure to share that a group of four of our esteemed alumni and student's project titled “Oasis Tale” has been shortlisted in Buildner’s international competition, Hospice – Home for the Terminally Ill, Edition #5, securing 23rd position among the Top 40 shortlisted entries. Representing RUET on an international platform, this achievement is a proud moment for us and for the RUET Architecture community. This recognition also contributed to RUET rising to the Top 3 all-time best universities in Bangladesh in the Buildner university rankings.

What makes it especially encouraging is the jury’s appreciation of the project’s core strength: its empathetic narrative foundation and its sensitive response to the realities of terminal patients in dense urban capital of Bangladesh.

Buildner’s expert assessment panel praised the project with the following comment: “Oasis Tale is defined by its empathetic narrative foundation, its strong response to Dhaka’s environmental pressures, and its thoughtful use of landscape and water as healing elements. Its central concept is to recreate the familiar rhythms of village life within an urban hospice, expressed through underground placement, water-based circulation, garden courts, and clustered pavilions inspired by rural Bengali landscapes. By placing the hospice below ground, the project offers a relevant and sensitive response to Dhaka’s noise, dust, and visual chaos.”
With over 10 years of experience, 160+ successfully completed competitions, and 450+ guest jury members, Buildner has established itself as one of the most respected international platforms for architecture competitions, consistently attracting highly competitive entries from across the globe. The platform is distinguished by its commitment to fostering innovation, encouraging ambitious and original design thinking, and providing architects and designers with a prestigious forum to present visionary ideas.

The students of the ’23 Series (Second Year, First Semester) present their studio project titled “Ergo Cell: Ergonomic Design of Micro-Living Space.”

This studio explored the critical architectural challenge of designing minimal yet highly functional living modules for low-income working groups who sustain everyday urban life. Grounded in Human Factors, with a strong emphasis on Ergonomics and Anthropometry, students investigated the spatial, movement, activity, and storage needs of selected non-traditional user groups to develop compact, multi-functional micro-living solutions.

The studio was conducted under the guidance of Md. Ezajul Islam and Mohammad Rakibul Islam Anik.

Sharing glimpses of the students’ thoughtful explorations and design outcomes.🍀

The Department of Architecture, RUET, is pleased to share that several studio works of the 4th Year Odd Semester (20 Series) have been successfully published as research articles in the 8th International Conference on Civil Engineering for Sustainable Development (ICCESD 2026), held at KUET, Khulna.

The published papers emerged directly from the 4th Year Urban Design Studio, where students explored contemporary urban challenges and design-based research approaches. Under the supervision of the studio instructors—ZHM Monjur Murshed, Assistant Professor, Department of Architecture, RUET, and Sheikh Hameem, Lecturer, Department of Architecture, RUET—students investigated the potential of introducing the 10-minute city concept within the existing urban context of Rajshahi. The research also examined the transformation of urban streets into civic corridors, integrating public life and civic activities within everyday street spaces.

The published research article titles are:

Rewilding Rajshahi: Reviving the Urban Spine Through Nature, Culture, and Community-Driven Design

Reinvigoration: Navigating Change Through Spatial Interventions

Intertwining Place-Making and Street Storytelling in Rajshahi’s Central Spine: From Zero Point to C&B Node

Reimagining Aam Chattar as a 10-Minute City Urban Nexus of Rajshahi

Closer to Home: Towards a Connected and Flexible Urban Future in Court Station, Rajshahi

This publication marks an important first step towards research engagement for the students and reflects a significant academic achievement—publishing peer-reviewed research articles during their undergraduate studies. It is a proud milestone for the 20 Series of the Department of Architecture, RUET, highlighting their commitment to research-led design thinking.

The department extends its heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the students for their achievement and hopes this experience will inspire continued exploration in architectural and urban research.

We are proud to welcome back Md Samiul Sabbir Islam, Assistant Professor, following the successful completion of his M.Sc. in Urban Strategies from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand.

His master’s thesis, “Investigating the Spatiality of Sites of Youth Āddā (Informal Social Hangout) in Changing Urban Landscape: A Study of Rajshahi, Bangladesh.”

The thesis explores which types of sites are preferred by youth for their frequent āddās (a form of conversation- and conversation-centric, prolonged, convivial hangout session that is highly prevalent throughout Bengal). Additionally, it explores what factors are responsible for the preference for any site. Lastly, it seeks to determine whether the rapidly changing urban landscape is altering preferences for such sites.

We warmly congratulate him on this significant academic achievement and look forward to his continued contributions to teaching, research, and the academic life of the department.
