Provincial Grand Lodge has now closed, bringing to an end a truly memorable and inspiring day.
The ceremony was a masterclass in ritual and organisation, and we extend our highest praise and sincere thanks to the Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies, W.Bro. Richards Thomas, together with his Deputies, W.Bro. Jonathan Evans and W.Bro. Shaun Cuddihy, for delivering a faultless and dignified ceremony.
Our gratitude must also go to the Provincial Grand Secretary, W.Bro. Ben Gait, and the many Stewards and Volunteers whose hard work, commitment, and dedication behind the scenes ensured that today’s meeting was the outstanding spectacle it proved to be. Their efforts are invaluable and greatly appreciated by all who attended.

Special thanks are due to the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, W.Bro. Dr. Akram Baig, and his dedicated team for overseeing the smooth running of the day and ensuring that every aspect of the meeting was conducted to the highest standard.
Finally, we offer our warmest congratulations to our newly invested Assistant Provincial Grand Master, W.Bro. Neil Martin Evans. We wish him every success in his new role and look forward to his continued service to the Province of South Wales.

On Tuesday night Prince Michael of Kent Mark Lodge No. 1913 held it's installation meeting at the Masonic Centre, Salters, St.George, Barbados. When the Worshipful Master W.Bro. Barry Lee Crawford, JP, District Grand Charity Steward installed Bro. Michael Mcdonald McClean as the Worshipful Master for the Masonic year.

It was a great installation meeting and well supported by twenty six members of Prince Michael of Kent Mark Lodge, Albion Mark Lodge No. 212 was represented by the W.M.Bro. Don Boyce and ten Brethren, we had W.Bro. Hamilton Marshall (Master of Epworth Mark Lodge No. 1771 London). Comp. Jeron Hall of Phoenix Royal Arch Chapter No. 22 in the Grand Chapter of Canada in the Province of Ontario. Plus two Companions from the District Grand Royal Arch Chapter Scottish Constitution, ME Comp Joseph Edwards, Depute 2nd District Grand Principal and ME 1st Principal of Thistle Royal Arch Chapter No. 763 and District Grand Steward. There was three Past Grand Officers present and eleven District Grand Officers plus the District Grand Master R.W. District Grand Master. I gave a District Grand Rank Field Appointment to W.Bro. Henderson Euparker Franklin for his services and continued support to Prince Michael of Kent Mark Lodge No. 1913.

The Annual Provincial Priory of Essex Knights Templar meeting was held at Saxon Hall, Southend on 14 May. Nearly 200 Knights attended the meeting with guests joining the Knights of Essex from far and wide, including the Provinces of East Anglia, Yorkshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, Middlesex, Oxfordshire, Surrey, Hampshire, Northamptonshire, Dorset, Nottinghamshire, Monmouth & South Wales, Somerset and London. All helping to make the meeting such a great success.
The Provincial Prior R.E.Kt. Roger Smith carried out the ceremony for the investiture of the new Provincial Sub-Prior E.Kt. Graham Elvidge PG Herald. The Provincial Prior warmly thanked the outgoing Sub-Prior E.Kt. Mark Harrison for his service over the last three years.
The Active officers for the year were appointed and invested by the Provincial Prior along with those Knights receiving their first honours and promotions. The Provincial Bodyguard entertained the gathering with an excellent rendition and display of the ‘Silent Drill’ under the guidance of the Bodyguard Commander E.Kt. Peter Dawson which was warmly received by all those attending.
The Provincial Prior reported that the new Provincial ‘Centenary Fund’ was coming along extremely well and had now reached the excellent sum of £27000. The Prior took the opportunity of presenting ‘Patron Certificates’ to those Preceptories that had achieved Patron status. The new Individual Patron scheme was progressing well with 100 Knights having taken the opportunity to join the scheme and wear the ‘Patrons Collaret’ with pride.
Following the success of the limited edition cufflinks, it was announced that the latest Commemorative item, the ‘Firing Sword Holder’ was about to be launched and nearly 100 had been forward ordered.
The Prior thanked Kt. David Ford of Maplested Preceptory who has designed and made the items, for his generosity in bearing the cost of both materials and labour to enable the Fund to retain fully the £5000 profit it will produce on the sales. During the Provincial Priors address he informed the Knights of the great success the Province has had over the last year and of the enthusiasm shown by the Knights when attending Preceptory visits, visits to other Provinces and the attendance at the Provincial Preceptory of Improvement which is the envy of many other Provinces.
He told the Knights that they should be proud of the enthusiasm, drive, passion and dedication that they show to the order in Essex, as he indeed is proud of them. He announced that the Province would be making a further donation of £3000 to the St. John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital.
Following the recession from the meeting, the Knights of the Province along with the guests enjoyed drinks followed by a very enjoyable Luncheon. The day had lived up to the Provincial Priors watch words of the Order in Essex. Friendship, Fellowship and fun.

5 Countries Challenge - the launch of the training phase
With only three months to go to the start of the 5 Countries challenge, the Cheshire Deputy Provincial Grand Master John Miller, was pleased to seek the support of the Mark Masons’ Hall’s Communications team to help raise awareness and support for their charitable event, and is seen here presenting Vimee Patel with a ride shirt, marking the start of the more serious training phase.

The event, which currently has 18 riders taking part either in the full ride or sections they can attend, takes the team through five countries in 6 days, and is focused on raising money for each of the participants individual charitable causes, including the M.B.F., C.P.M.B.F. and the Cheshire Craft 2027 Festival.

The Provincial Grand Master, Right Worshipful Brother David Charles Purdie, travelled to Plymouth to preside at the recent installation meeting of the Fortitude Lodge of Mark Master Masons No. 66. He was accompanied by Worshipful Brother Christopher Elliott, the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, together with several Grand Officers, including on their first evening out together, Worshipful Brothers Bill Philip, Grand Junior Deacon and John Hipwell, Grand Steward, alongside Worshipful Brother Gilson Rowe, Past Grand Junior Deacon and the Provincial Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies.

They were further joined by a good number of Provincial Grand Lodge Officers, including Worshipful Brother Barry Purdy, the Provincial Grand Senior Warden and Worshipful Brother Robert Hendy, the Provincial Grand Junior Warden, together with Worshipful Brother Andrew Hall, the Provincial Grand Master Overseer and Worshipful Brother Robert Truesdale, the Provincial Grand Senior Overseer.

The main labour of the evening was to see the new Worshipful Master installed into the chair of this fine lodge. The Worshipful Master, Worshipful Brother Peter Foukes, installed his successor, Worshipful Brother Mark Hart, in a fine manner, and was assisted during the evening by members of the Devon Mark Support Team, and in particular Worshipful Brother Russell Dearing for his delivery of the Working tools, together with Worshipful Brothers Mark Rodd and Paul Stephenson standing in as Master Overseer and Inner Guard respectively.

Following the meeting, the brethren retired to the refectory where they joined together and enjoyed an excellent festive board.

Worshipful Brother Christopher Elliott, the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, joined brethren from the Devon Lodge of Mark Master Masons No. 215 recently to help present a donation to the Kingsteignton Scout Hut. He was accompanied on this visit by the Worshipful Master, Worshipful Brother David Gerry, Worshipful Brother Donald Johans, the Lodge Charity Steward and Worshipful Brother Keith Eddiford, the Lodge Almoner.

The Lodge has a close connection with the local Scouts, and for many years its members have helped to maintain the building, including brethren such as Very Worshipful Brothers Duncan and Smerdon, and the late Worshipful Brother Chris Pugh, whose name adorns the building.

The building itself is owned by the Scouts but now requires roof repairs, and, having been identified as a suitable cause, the brethren of Devon Lodge proposed supporting this local group. Scouting is vital in these rural communities. It combats youth isolation, builds essential life skills, and keeps young people active in their local areas. By providing structured outdoor adventure and community service, scouting creates a safe, supportive environment where young people can belong.

The lodge donated £500 to the scout hut to put towards the repairs, which was matched by the Devon Mark Charity Association with an identical amount. The two cheques, totalling £1000, were presented to Troop leaders Sarah Horder and Steve Robinson by the Assistant Provincial Grand Master and Worshipful Master. Both Sarah and Steve expressed their thanks to both the Lodge and the Devon Mark Charity Association for their generous support.

On a damp morning in South Brent, the hardy knights of Conclave of Ascension No. 499 gathered for their meeting, undeterred by the weather and encouraged by a strong spirit of fellowship.

Although numbers were low, the conclave enjoyed a good meeting, highlighted by the presentation of a Grand Conclave certificate to W.Kt. Allen Hosking, carried out in fine fashion by Deputy Intendant General John Redman.

The gathering was further enriched by an excellent Masonic talk from V.Ill.Kt. Warner Barton on the Ammonites, which was very well received.

The conclave then closed, and the knights retired to enjoy a lovely festive board in good Christian company.

A Meeting of the Merthyr Tydfil Council No. 120 of the District Grand Council of South Wales of the Order of Royal and Select Masters was held on Friday, 12 June 2026 at the Masonic Hall, Park Terrace, Merthyr Tydfil in the presence of Ill.Comp. Stephen Elfan Bell P.G.Cond.C., the Deputy District Grand Master, Ill.Comp. Neil Martin Evans P.G.Swd.B., the District Grand Principal Conductor of the Work, V.Ill.Comp. T.R. Eirian Jones P.G.Lect. (the Past Provincial Grand Master of Mark Masons of the Province of South Wales), Ill.Comp. Paul R. Calderwood P.G.Capt.Gd. (the Provincial Prior of the Province of Monmouth and South Wales of the Order of Knights Templar), Ill.Comp. Christopher M. L. Davies P.PG.Capt.Gd.(the Grand Director of Ceremonies of the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons), Ill. Comp. Stephen Waters P.A.G.D.C. (the District Grand Director of Ceremonies), Ill.Comp. Ralph K. Powell P.G.Man., Ill.Comp. Dr. R. Paul Owens P.G.Swd.B (The Treasurer of the Merthyr Tydfil Council) and a very significant number of District Grand Officers, Members of the Council and Guests.

Two Ceremonies were held during the evening, the first being a Council of Royal Masters which was to Honour Comp. Nicholas S. Meaney as a Royal Master and was conducted by Ill.Comp. Dr. R. Paul Owens P.G.Swd.B who gave a superb exposition of the Ceremony.

The second was a Council of Most Excellent Masters, which was carried out in fine form by the Thrice Illustrious Master, Ill.Comp. Christopher Llewellyn, the Deputy Master, Comp. Keri J. Evans P.Dist.A.G.Rec. and Ill.Comp. Andrew B. Davies (the Immediate Past Thrice Illustrious Master) for a total of Seven Candidates (three of whom had already been invested as Manciples of the Merthyr Tydfil Council).

Alms having been collected, the Council was closed in due form, and the attendees repaired to the spacious Dining Hall of the Merthyr Tydfil Hall where they enjoyed an excellent repast for which the Hall is noted.

The Merthyr Tydfil Council No. 120 meets at the Masonic Temple, Park Terrace, Merthyr Tydfil CF47 8RF on the Second Friday in March and June and the Third Tuesday in September.

The Province of Staffordshire and Shropshire once again held their Provincial Priory meeting at the Staffordshire Showground on Monday, 8 June 2026. The weather was unusually kind to us, and we enjoyed the day’s activities in a much cooler environment than has been the norm in recent years, much to everyone’s satisfaction. The Province was very happy to receive distinguished guests from many other Provinces, including 12 Provincial Priors, 12 Provincial Sub-Priors and other high-ranking Knights as well as heads of other orders from within the Province of Staffordshire with a total of 142 in attendance. The Prov Prior R.E.Kt. David Philips was as ever an excellent host and thanked everyone for their attendance. During his address he thanked the Malta delegation, Banner Bearers and the active officers who were standing down after a successful year in office. He also announced the formation of the new ‘Knights of the Black Sword’ initiative which is aimed at those Knights who have yet to attain the rank of Eminent Preceptor and will hopefully encourage inter preceptory visiting as well as promoting the learning aspects of being a Knights Templar for our newer Knights.
The festive board following the event was very well received as we all devoured our baked ham and the accompanying courses which is now an ongoing tradition of the province. During the response to his toast the Provincial Prior presented a cheque to our long-standing Vice Chancellor John Francis who was standing down after many years of service, as well as flowers for his wife Sheila, he also took the opportunity of welcoming our new Vice Chancellor E.Kt. Philip Spencer-Gray into his new role. In addition, our Sub-Prior E.Kt. Ralph Ritchey and Marshal E.Kt. Garry Breakwell also received flowers for their long-suffering wives. The Prov Prior thanked everyone for their attendance and wished them all a safe journey home after a very enjoyable meeting.

On 13 May 2026, R.W. Bro. John Finlay presented V.W. Bro. Dennis Baum with a 50-Year Long Service Award, recognising an exceptional lifetime of dedication to Mark Masonry.
Dennis's Masonic journey reflects a remarkable family legacy, following in the footsteps of both his father, V.W. Bro. Derek Baum, and grandfather, W. Bro. Leonard Baum, who also served Beaconsfield Lodge with distinction.
Over five decades, Dennis has held numerous offices and honours in Mark Masonry and Craft Freemasonry, while mentoring generations of Freemasons.
Beyond lodge life, he played a pivotal role in developing Saxon Hall into one of Essex's leading Masonic centres through his service as a Director and officer of the company.
The ceremony celebrated not only Dennis's personal achievements but also his family's enduring contribution to Essex Freemasonry, culminating in the poignant presentation of his father's 50-year pin.
