Once Upon a Broomstick: CALL FOR AUDITIONS

The UFV SOCA Theatre Department is holding auditions for a student pop-up show, Once Upon a Broomstick, written by Sylvia Ashby, and directed by Sterling Kai Po***ck.

Once Upon a Broomstick (1990) is a Halloween horror-style humourous tale. Transforming it into a darker, scarier, and twisted delight for adult audiences. Step into a world where enchantment and betrayal collide. Join Malvolia, a captivating witch, as she sets her sights on winning the affection of her dashing apprentice, Tobias, using a nefarious scheme. Accompanied by her cunning feline familiar, Vinegar Tom, and the interfering maid, Belinda, playwright Ashby expertly intertwines a tale of love, heartache, vengeance, and deception. This Halloween tale promises a hair-raising mix of terrifying beings, magic potions, and captivating characters and spells. Can the Professor, the only hope for our characters, summon his white magic again, or will his forgetfulness and absentmindedness spell their doom?

Performances will occur on October 31st, Nov. 1st & 2nd. This is part of a pop-up production a non-credited free opportunity; no cost is required to participate.

If you’re looking for monologues, you can find some on the bookshelf in the D building Student Lounge (D107), or online at www.monologuearchive.com and www.monologuedb.com
● We recommend choosing a single character for each monologue and delivering it in your natural voice without using any accents.
● You should pick active monologues where your character seeks something from someone rather than just telling a story. For a better selection, we suggest you choose personally meaningful, relatable, age-appropriate monologues that align with your experience level.
● Choose monologues from published plays, not books, internet publications, films, or television scripts.

Suggestions for auditions:
● You should arrive well before your scheduled audition time and complete the necessary audition form beforehand. Upon arrival, please submit the completed form.
● It is advisable to become familiar with the play before the auditions. Once your time slot is confirmed, you will receive a PDF copy of the script for your review. Please refrain from copying or sharing the script with others. We will conduct cold readings during the audition, and being familiar with the play will be beneficial throughout the audition process.

Notes about the production:
● Once Upon a Broomstick will start rehearsals immediately, following the cast list posting on Monday, September 16th, beginning that week.
● The production dates are October 31st, November 1st and November 2nd, with two evening performances and a matinee on November 2nd. Please be aware that tech week will be the week off and potentially before, so additional days and hours are required.

Theatre experience preferred, but not necessary!

The Hideout Synopsis: What do 2 German soldiers in N**i Germany have in common with 2 Jewish sisters? Hatred, perhaps, but that’s not the only thing. With their whole company now outmaneuvered by the progressing Allied Forces, Corp. Hofle and Pvt. Keppler resort to abandoning their post and finding refuge in house downtrodden with ruin, loss and desolation. But they are not the only ones there. They are not even the first ones there. The 2 Jewish sisters, Edith and Emma, hunkered down in this old house now share something more than just hate with these soldiers- the confines of their hideout. Rife with apprehension, the quartet confront, contend and commiserate, among themselves about their purpose, duty and fate. The play explores sentiments that bear resemblance to the 21st century anti-work movement, echoing the idea that freedom lies not just in resisting the work that goes against ones values but also in actively pursuing work that aligns with one's heart.

Come be a part of this exciting student production!
