Today we would like to look back at our wonderful commencement speaker who spoke recently to our Class of 2026. A big thank-you to pro-life advocate Angelina Steenstra for her powerful address to our grads. Steenstra serves as Canadian National Coordinator for the Silent No More Awareness Campaign and we were honoured to welcome her for our graduation celebrations! SWC bestowed the Catholic Culture Award upon Steenstra and her husband Walter for their important work in promoting a culture of life in Canada.

The Admissions Counselor supports the Director of Enrolment in the daily operations of the Enrolment Office. The Admissions Counselor aids in recruitment efforts, specifically through coordinating onsite visits, namely, three Come and Visit weekends per academic year and the Veritas Summer Program, and offsite visits such as parish visits. The Admissions Counselor shepherds applicants through the application process, answering any questions they might have about the academic calendar, application requirements, scholarships and bursaries, and the program itself

We're excited to welcome Archbishop Marcel Damphousse (Ottawa-Cornwall) as the keynote speaker for this year’s Wojtyla Summer Institute for Teachers, hosted by Our Lady Seat of Wisdom College from August 6-9. He will also be on the Saturday discussion panel as well!

Archbishop Damphousse’s keynote is titled: “Go Out. Go Deep. Go Together”: A pastoral vision for a Church in transition. In a desire to revitalize parishes in the Archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall, and inspired by Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation “Evangelii Gaudium”, Archbishop Damphousse will share his pastoral vision of a Church in need of a transition from maintenance to missionary outreach.

Archbishop Marcel Damphousse was born in Saint-Joseph, Manitoba, and ordained a priest in 1991 for the Archdiocese of Saint-Boniface. His faith was first nurtured by his family, schools, and parish community, and deepened through faith groups and retreat experiences that made his relationship with Jesus real and personal. He has served in parishes, schools, and diocesan leadership, always with a heart for accompanying others. Appointed bishop in 2012, he served in Alexandria-Cornwall and Sault Ste. Marie before becoming Archbishop of Ottawa–Cornwall in 2020. He finds particular joy in celebrating Confirmations and connecting with youth and families, sharing how lives are transformed through the Holy Spirit.

Our Lady Seat of Wisdom College mourns the passing of longtime staff member and friend James Hanlon on June 8, 2026.

Along with his wife Karen, James was an important and beloved member of the Our Lady Seat of Wisdom community from its beginning. He volunteered and worked for the then-Academy in various ways in the first dozen years. He was a close friend to those who were involved with the school in those earlier years. We are very thankful for all of his work over the years especially in the design and construction of the St. Kateri’s and Sts. Peter and Paul residences.

The funeral will take place on Monday, June 15, 2026, at 10:30am, at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Barry’s Bay. It will be followed by a burial at the cemetery on Pine Cliff Road near Combermere. There will then be a reception at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church.

The college is preparing a spiritual bouquet for the intention of the repose of James’ soul, to be presented to the Hanlon family on the day of the funeral. Those who would like to contribute to this spiritual bouquet are asked to email the administrative coordinator, Hannah Afelskie ([email protected]), with their offering by the evening of Sunday, June 15th.

This issue carries much wonderful news but most significantly, the Diocese of Pembroke has appointed Fr. Scott Murray as our new chaplain!

Fr. Murray is not only a diocesan priest, but an alumnus of our College. To see one of our own graduates return to serve our community in this capacity is a profound sign of the mission bearing fruit.

Our Lady Seat of Wisdom College is excited to showcase our talented lineup of speakers for the upcoming fifteenth annual Wojtyla Summer Institute, which will take place from August 6-9, 2026.

Learn more about our keynote speaker, Archbishop Marcel Damphousse, and our other featured speakers. Their biographies and talk descriptions are now available on our website!

This year's theme is “‘Be Not Afraid’: The Church’s Call to Mission in a Post-Christian World.” Inspired by St. John Paul II’s constant exhortation “Be not afraid,” this theme focuses on the Church’s mission in our time of cultural upheaval and secularization.

The Institute will explore how families, parishes, and those engaged in the intellectual life can respond with renewed apostolic zeal in our post-Christian age.

The Wojtyla Summer Institute aims to advance Our Lady Seat of Wisdom College’s mission to serve the Church by offering programs focused on aspects of the faith and Catholic social teaching. The feast of Our Lady Seat of Wisdom, our patronal feast, is observed on June 8th. The title of Mary as ‘Seat of Wisdom’ is an ancient one, traced back liturgically to the twelfth century, when we find prayers to the Virgin as the ‘Mother of Wisdom’, the ‘fountain of Wisdom’ and, of course, the ‘Seat of Wisdom’.

She is seen not only as the Mother of Christ, Who is Wisdom Incarnate, but also as the prototypical ‘wise Virgin’ herself, who ‘kept all these words in her heart’, in order to ‘teach, recount, and proclaim them to the world’ (cf.,Sacramentary for Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary).
