On Friday, we celebrated the end of practical training with a BBQ for our Heavy Equipment Operator students! 🌭🍔

We’re incredibly proud of everything this group has accomplished over the past several weeks.

Our Dozer group has been putting their training into action in the quarry this week! 🚜👏

The 850 Dozer has been working on the new quarry high wall road extension, pushing and placing loads hauled in by the rigid frame trucks. Materials were installed in lifts to build up the roadway, and on wetter days, students helped build up the crusher laydown yard pad using loads hauled in by the rigid frame trucks.

The D2 and D4 Dozers spent the week pushing up millings hauled by articulating trucks while learning GPS-guided grading and sloping techniques to build a level pad. Great hands-on experience developing precision operating skills and working as a team on active projects!

Technology is changing the industry — and our students are getting hands-on experience with it! 👏

Recently, our students have been learning about Machine Control and Guidance Systems (MCG), technology that helps operators precisely position their machines, check grades, and collect important site data in real time. 🚧📡

Using both 2D and 3D guidance systems, students are gaining experience with the tools that help improve accuracy, efficiency, and productivity on today’s job sites.

These technologies are becoming increasingly important in the field, and it’s exciting to see our students building skills that will prepare them for the future of the industry!

Before the keys turn or the wheels move, it all starts with a pre-trip. 🚛

Our Class 3 students are putting in the work, completing thorough pre-trip inspections twice a day as part of their training.

It’s all about building the habits that keep equipment safe, prevent issues before they happen, and set them up for success on their road test — and on the job!

The Excavator Group has been busy building their skills and putting them into action out in the quarry 💪

Lately, they’ve been focusing on improving their maneuvering while supporting other groups—sorting materials and loading off-highway trucks to keep projects moving with the right resources.

They’ve also taken on a road stripping project, bringing a section down to ledge rock in preparation for rock breaking. This will give them the chance to get hands-on with an excavator hammer as they work to widen a tight corner—just like they would on a real job site.

On top of that, students have been introduced to rigging, safely lifting and placing sections of concrete pipe while maintaining full control of the load.

All of this while continuing to build confidence with the basics—controls, techniques, and precision. 👏

This week, our Backhoe group is focusing on bringing together everything they’ve learned so far in a hands-on mobile equipment exercise, including truck loading with both the front and back bucket.

Students are applying key skills in a real-world style setting, with an emphasis on safe and efficient work habits. This includes completing thorough pre-op inspections, prioritizing tasks, and properly preparing the job site at the start of each day.

They are also working on refining their techniques for setting up, repositioning, and maneuvering the backhoe, while building confidence in material handling and improving hand-eye coordination. Ongoing focus is placed on site awareness, hazard recognition, and safe roading of equipment.

In addition, students are encouraged to think ahead by planning for end-of-day site setup and the next day’s work scope.

It’s a strong practical exercise that helps connect all their training into one coordinated, real-world experience!
