This week, we raised the Haudenosaunee flag to honour National Indigenous History Month in Canada. It is a time to recognize the rich history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Metis.

"Also known as the Six Nations Confederacy flag, the Haudenosaunee flag symbolizes the Hiawatha wampum belt and represents each of the original Five Nations (Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, and Mohawk nations). The square on the right represents the Mohawk, followed by one representing the Oneida. At the center is the Great Tree of Peace, which represents the Onondaga. To the immediate left of the tree is a square representing the Cayuga, followed by one for the Seneca. Each symbol is connected, representing the union of the nations."

A heartfelt thank you to Joe Valliere, Rama First Nation member, and Jim Calder, Canadian National Field Lacrosse Team player and author of Tales of a Lacrosse Troubadour, for their inspiring presentation at our Sticks and Stories event! πŸ™

Elementary students from Muskoka Falls Public School, had an unforgettable experience learning about the rich history and cultural significance of the ancient game of lacrosse while crafting their very own lacrosse sticks, crafted in house on our CNC machine! πŸ› οΈπŸ”₯

What a powerful way to blend culture, creativity, and community! πŸ’«

🌿✨ students at Georgian College Muskoka Campus had the honor of learning from Sarah Cunningham, Indigenous Patient Care Navigator with Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare.

Sarah spoke about the importance of her role as an Indigenous Patient Care Navigator β€” a compassionate bridge between Indigenous patients, healthcare providers, and community services. From advocating for culturally safe care to supporting access to traditional healing and translation services, her role is to ensure every patient is seen, heard, and respected. 🧑

Students also had the opportunity to participate in a smudging ceremony; a sacred tradition that purifies and uplifts the mind, body, and spirit. πŸ•ŠοΈπŸ”₯

This powerful session deepened our students’ understanding of Indigenous health and the importance of providing care with cultural awareness and respect. πŸŒŽπŸ’¬
