SFU Beedie alumnus Tom Kineshanko's legacy reminds us that entrepreneurship is grounded in curiosity, resilience, and a willingness to embrace new possibilities.

Through the Thomas Kineshanko Memorial Entrepreneurial Prize, his legacy lives on in each new venture it helps bring to life, inspiring student-entrepreneurs to create meaningful impact.

Celebrating a life of curiosity | Madelaine Kineshanko established the Thomas Kineshanko Memorial Entrepreneurial Prize in 2025 in memory of her son, honouring his unconventional path as an inspiring innovator and entrepreneur.

An SFU Beedie alumnus and former varsity track and field athlete, Tom spent 15 years building multiple environmental technology ventures, and was guided by the conviction that real progress requires patience, experimentation, and fresh thinking.

🔦 Meet our student spotlight of the week, Sonakshi Rao! Sonakshi is a fourth-year student pursuing a Joint Major in Business and Economics, with concentrations in Finance and MIS. She is currently an Analyst at Beedie Endowment Asset Management Fund and is completing her internship as a Credit Valuations Summer Analyst at Nesto Group. Throughout her time at Beedie, she has been involved in various other clubs and competitions, namely serving as a Team Lead at Axis Consulting, an SFU JDC WEST Delegate, and a BMP Mentor.

📌 What's your favourite thing about going to SFU Beedie?

The people I’ve met through the different teams and communities I’ve been part of. I’ve had the chance to work alongside some incredibly driven, talented, and like-minded people, which makes the experience that much more rewarding. Some of my favourite memories have come from those experiences: working late nights or early mornings, competing together, celebrating a win, and representing Beedie with pride!

📌 What's the best way to get involved and make connections at SFU Beedie?

I believe the best way to get involved is to put yourself out there by applying to and joining clubs, attending networking events, having chats with people who are in roles you want to be in, and just being open to various opportunities since you never know what could happen and how things could work out for the best! Never reject yourself and always treat setbacks as learning experiences.

📌 What's your current ?

Like many others, one of my best Beedie moments so far was at JDC West in Saskatchewan earlier this year. Hearing the Beedie School of Business announced at the awards gala among eleven other competing universities was an incredible feeling. Having my team, Operations Management, place made it even more memorable, especially after months of preparation and hard work from our team and coaches. It was a great reminder that, as our Co-Captain Adrian liked to say, “success isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon!”

The Indigenous Business Leadership Executive MBA (IBL EMBA) program has welcomed its newest cohort with an orientation week grounded in building community.

Marked by a powerful Drumming-In Ceremony at the Segal Graduate School of Business, students spent orientation connecting with peers, faculty, staff, and the systems that will support them throughout their MBA journey.

We are deeply grateful to the IBL Team, Chief Ian Campbell, Chief Leanne Joe, Talaysay Tours Canoeing, Sen̓áḵw Village, and Dr. Michelle Corfield for graciously hosting and contributing to such a meaningful week. We also extend our appreciation to our faculty, Dr. Dara Kelly-Roy and Dr. Emily Salmon.

We hold our hands up in gratitude to everyone who played a part in welcoming our new students into the growing Indigenous Business network. We are excited for all that this cohort will bring to the journey ahead.

🔦 Meet our student spotlight of the week, Ryan Head! Ryan is a senior BBA student concentrating in Accounting. As President of the SFU Business Administration Student Society, he is passionate about creating opportunities that help students connect, grow, and succeed. Ryan has competed in case competitions, completed a co-op, and will be joining PwC's Tax team next summer. He believes the experiences and relationships built outside the classroom have been just as valuable as those inside it, and is committed to helping every student feel like they belong in the Beedie community.

📌 What’s your favourite thing about going to SFU Beedie?

Without a doubt, it's the people. The students on campus, the friends I've made through clubs, and the broader Beedie community all genuinely want to see you succeed. I've made lifelong friends, found incredible mentors, and had opportunities I never would have imagined because people were willing to support and invest in me. That sense of community is what makes SFU Beedie so special.

📌What's the best way to make connections and get involved at SFU Beedie?

Say yes to opportunities, even if they feel outside your comfort zone. Attend events, join a student organization, compete in a case competition, or simply introduce yourself to the person sitting beside you in class. Some of my closest friendships and biggest opportunities started from a single conversation. You never know where one connection might lead.

📌 What’s your current ?

Being elected BASS President. It's an incredible privilege to give back to a community that has given me so much. Seeing students connect through our events, programs, and new initiatives, and knowing our team is helping create an even stronger Beedie community, has been the most rewarding experience of my university journey.

We hold our hands up to our recent graduates of the Indigenous Business Leadership Executive MBA (IBL EMBA) program.

In June, convocation was preceded by our traditional blanket ceremony, led by Chief Ian Campbell. During the ceremony, each graduate was blanketed over their shoulders as a way to show respect and to honour their accomplishments.

As the newest graduates of the program, they join a growing community of 356 IBL EMBA alumni as they continue their business leadership journeys.
