SFU Hyperbaric Chamber

SFU Hyperbaric Chamber The EMPU is Canada's only hyper/hypobaric research chamber. We specialize in training for clinical hyperbarics as well as awareness dives for the public.

Environmental Medicine and Physiology Unit (EMPU) at Simon Fraser University is the only civilian research hyper/hypobaric facility in Canada. It is capable of pressurizing or, “diving,” to 305 meters of sea water as well as drawing a vacuum, or “flying” the unit, to 33.5km Above Sea Level (ASL), which is equivalent to the atmospheric pressure on Mars! The EMPU is commited to advancing hyperbaric

research. Some projects we have facilitated include: pilot high altitude training (hypoxia), monitoring human operational parameters, acclimatization training, testing of survival suits, life-support systems, electronics and fuel cells. We also host community groups and dive clubs to come and "dive" the chamber. Pressurizing the group down to 40m/160ft of seawater, you will get to feel the effects of gas narcosis and learn about some considerations we take when going under pressure. If you are interested in the research we do, or would like to set up a community chamber dive, contact us today!
