At JDC West, the ten academic case disciplines will challenge students to think critically and strategically when solving a real-life business problem. The competition provides a platform for students to showcase their confidence and professionalism when presenting their recommendation to a panel of industry judges. The academic competition encompasses ten cases covering Accounting, Business Strategy, Business Technology Management, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Human Resources, International Business, Marketing, Not-For-Profit, Operations Management. For the 9 strategy-based cases, teams of 3 will be given a three hour deliberation time followed by a 20 minute presentation to a panel of industry professionals and judges, ending in 5 minutes of Q&A. The entrepreneurship case will be structured similarly to an entrepreneurial pitch. Each team of 3 will be given three hours to create and discuss an entrepreneurial opportunity, followed by a 23 minute presentation. The 23 minutes will be divided into 3 sections: 5 minutes to present without interruption, 15 minutes of unprotected speech where judges can ask questions and then 3 minutes to conclude. Debate:
The JDC West debate is based on a parliamentary structure, found in the Canadian House of Commons. Each team of 4 is randomly selected to represent either the government or opposition, and they debate to pass or defeat a proposed public bill. For each debate, competitors are given thirty minutes to review the proposal and come up with their constructive arguments around the proposed resolution. Topics can include current economic, societal, and political issues. Athletics:
JDC WEST promotes the active lifestyle, alongside academic excellence. The Athletic Competition creates a fun to watch and extremely competitive setting where teams have the opportunity to show athleticism and sportsmanship.
