Congratulations to MRU's Ranjan Datta, PhD, who was selected to the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists!

On Sept. 9, the Royal Society of Canada officially announced its 2026 cohort of Fellows and Members of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, recognizing outstanding achievement across Canada’s scholarly, scientific and artistic communities. Among those names was Mount Royal University’s Dr. Ranjan Datta, PhD, who is an associate professor of Indigenous studies with MRU’s Department of Humanities and a Canada Research Chair in Community Disaster Research since 2020.

“Today, we are pleased to welcome the newest Fellows and College Members of the Royal Society of Canada. Their work spans breakthroughs in medicine, technology and climate research, contributions in the arts and literature, leadership in reconciliation, and efforts to build a more inclusive future. These individuals are shaping Canadian society through their scholarship, creativity, and impact — today and into the years ahead,” said Dr. Françoise Baylis, PhD, president of the RSC.

On any given afternoon or evening in the summertime, chances are thousands of people are packed into Okotoks’ Seaman Stadium taking in a Dawgs baseball game.

The Dawgs are part of the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL), Canada’s summer collegiate league. The program started in Calgary in 1995, with the team making Seaman Stadium their home in 2007.

Since the opening of the stadium, dozens of Mount Royal students and alumni have had the chance to intern and work for the Dawgs each summer, providing invaluable experience in the sports industry.

"MRU students and alumni come well prepared, ambitious and eager to learn, bringing relevant education and a drive we get excited for year after year,” says Dawgs president Tyler Hollick.

"We value the relationship we have built with the school and its students and are excited to continue welcoming MRU students and alumni for many years to come."

On Monday at Mount Royal University, Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario, announced the launch of the Transportation and Supply Chain Workforce Alliance.

This is the third such alliance announced by the Canadian government, aimed at bringing together industry partners to address challenges and keep Canada’s supply chains running.

The Transportation and Supply Chain Workforce Alliance will be led by Trucking HR Canada in partnership with Canada’s Association of Logistics Provider (CIFFA). It will bring together employers, educators, labour organizations as well as Indigenous partners who will work together to address challenges in their industries, respond to technological changes and an increasing demand for skilled workers.

A new workforce alliance will help provide students with more opportunities to learn and gain employment.

Beyond being a distinguished educator, Dr. Robert (Bob) Steadward, PhD, has dedicated much of his life to supporting and developing the parasports world.

Steadward’s long and respected career in sports accessibility began with his volunteering to coach the Edmonton Handicaddies, a wheelchair basketball team, in 1967 while a student at the University of Alberta. From there, he went on to help organize the first Canadian wheelchair sport national championships, hosted at the University of Alberta in 1968. He then coached for the Canadian Paralympic Committee, teaching dozens of athletes with disabilities in track and swimming, leading teams to the 1972 Paralympic Games, International Stoke Mandeville Games and the 1971 Jamaican Para Pan-American Games. His subsequent career would take him to several more Paralympics.

And now, thanks to the work and generosity of Steadward and Dr. David Legg, PhD, of Mount Royal’s Department of Health and Physical Education, the Mount Royal Library’s Archives and Special Collections now houses an important collection of Steadward’s memorabilia and records.

It was an attention-grabbing announcement. In 1960, Mount Royal College, a private school of 850 students, planned to field a football team. The players would go on to make history as the first Cougars.

Welcomed into the Alberta Junior Football League, the Cougars joined three established outfits, including the powerhouse Edmonton Huskies.

The concept was fascinating, said head coach John Borger in an interview, who pointed out that it was the first time in Canada that junior football and education were being combined. “On this one point alone, I am forced to feel that this is going to be a successful venture.”

His announcement was preserved in a book created for the team’s 40th anniversary in 2000. The commemoration was brought into the Library’s Archives and Special Collections by MRU Marketing and Communication Coordinator Chase Goods, the grandson of Cougars fullback Bill Goods.
