How can archaeologists come to terms with the colonial history of our discipline? In a newly published article, our Field School Director Dr. Lindsay Amundsen-Meyer explores the concept of Indigenous archaeologies, poses questions, and puts forward suggestions for future collaborative work in which archaeologists show up with an open heart, open mind and open ears and ask, ‘How can I help’?

Dr. Lindsay Amundsen-Meyer and our ARKY 306 field school were included in a small way in an episode of the Aboriginal People's Television Network show Little Big Community focused on the Siksika Nation, which filmed in 2023. The episode (now streaming on APTN Lumi!) tells the stories of two Siksika change-makers, including our colleague Dr. Vivian Ayoungman. It is truly an honor to be part of Vivian's story - she is an incredible person and an advocate for her community!

Meet Jarrett, Carol and Flair from Montreal Lake Cree Nation, who go back to their traplines and land-based teachings.

The Spring 2025 school will take place at several archaeological sites within the City of Calgary’s Edworthy Park (pending all necessary permissions). Students will gain hands-on experience in all aspects of archaeological excavation and survey as they test and excavate a Precontact campsite, document ongoing erosion at the historic site of Brickburn, and participate in archaeology survey to create an inventory of sites present within the park. This course provides important field experience for those looking to continue in archaeology. For more information and how to register, contact Dr. Lindsay Amundsen-Meyer ([email protected]).
