Research led by Dr. Walter Herzog at the University of Calgary is exploring new ways to improve knee osteoarthritis in people living with obesity.

The team found that aerobic exercise improved metabolism, lowered inflammation and restored healthy gut bacteria, while a fibre supplement called oligofructose helped reduce osteoarthritis and pain.

Together, these findings point to promising non-surgical approaches to improving joint health.

Congratulations to our institute director, Dr. Cheryl Barnabe.

Dr. Cheryl Barnabe, MD, MSc’11, has received the Canadian Rheumatology Association's 2026 Distinguished Investigator Award! 👏🏼

We are proud to celebrate the dedicated clinician-scientist, academic leader, mentor to Indigenous scholars, and community partner.

Dr. Barnabe is the director of the McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health and a proud member of the Otipemisiwak Métis government, where she has provided rheumatology care in Treaty 7 territory settings for over 15 years.

As a specialist in the epidemiology of rheumatic diseases, Dr. Barnabe holds multiple leadership positions including as Canada Research Chair in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Autoimmune Diseases and as the Arthur J.E. Child Chair in Rheumatology Outcomes Research.

Congrats to Dr. Cheryl Barnabe!
