Sky Tong already had nearly two decades of experience across banking, finance, leadership and education before she first approached her DBA. Yet as AI began reshaping industries and organizations, the CIBC area sales manager saw an opportunity to deepen her understanding of the forces driving change in business.

"Haskayne’s DBA program allowed me to bring my experience in banking, finance, leadership, teaching and entrepreneurship into the classroom while also challenging me to examine that experience more critically."

Tong says one of the biggest shifts came when the program challenged her instinct to move quickly from problem to solution. Through her coursework and research, she learned to spend more time listening, questioning assumptions and exploring perspectives that might otherwise be overlooked. That approach now influences everything from her leadership style to her research on emerging AI leadership roles in Canadian banking.

"The program does not ask us to leave our professional identities behind. It teaches us how to use our experience more thoughtfully and responsibly," she says.

Today, Tong says she's more comfortable with complexity and uncertainty, and more intentional about how she uses evidence to make decisions. The experience has strengthened her ability to connect practice, research and leadership while keeping her grounded in continuous learning.

"The more I learn, the more I recognize how much there is still to understand," says Tong.

For experienced professionals looking to deepen their impact, our upcoming DBA Information Session is a great place to start. Join us Sept. 16 to learn more: https://bit.ly/3SeFM77

In true Texas fashion, the new Texas Stock Exchange in Dallas is being labeled as a “a big and bold bet.” And it’s something that should interest us here in Canada, writes Haskayne's Dr. Ari Pandes, PhD, and Dr. Daniel Wilson, PhD, in a recent article for the Financial Post.

Carrying every exchange-listed security in the U.S., the TXSE caps a years-long, multi-faceted effort to attract companies and capital to the Lone Star State.

“Texas is competing for companies. So is everyone else, and it is a contest we have been quietly losing,” write Pandes and Wilson.

What a way to welcome Haskayne's Class of 2030! 🎉

Today, we kicked off the new year by welcoming our newest BComm students to Haskayne at our First-Year Orientation. From the tradeshow and carnival games to the ENTI 381 pop-up market, there was no shortage of energy and excitement. Students had the chance to discover all that Haskayne has to offer, meet their new classmates and connect with faculty, staff and student leaders.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make our largest orientation ever such a success.

Welcome to the Haskayne family, Class of 2030. We’re so excited to have you here and can’t wait to see where your journey takes you! 🙌

New grant funding for Canada's first neurofinance laboratory will lead the way in understanding how humans interact with automated financial tools, and what that means for investors.

Despite the popularity of digital finance platforms, "we still do not fully understand how the design of these platforms shapes the decisions people make with their money," says grant recipient Dr. Marius Zoican, PhD, Canada Research Chair in FinTech at Haskayne.

Congratulations Marius!

Business decisions shape the lives of consumers, communities and society as a whole. By connecting business research with real-world challenges, five recently funded research projects at the Haskayne School of Business are seeking to better understand issues that affect people every day, including shopping, housing, education and pharmacies.

Supported through grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Haskayne researchers Ruth Pogacar, Qiang Wang, Miguel Palacios and Luminita Enache, PhD, CPA, RN will advance research with meaningful implications for complex societal issues.

Congratulations to the researchers contributing to this important work, and to Haskayne on a record year of national research funding.

For students, the transition from classroom learning to a career comes with questions. What does the next step look like? How can academic knowledge translate into meaningful work? Who can help navigate the path ahead?

At Haskayne, the BMO Mentorship Program bridges that gap by connecting students with experienced business leaders who offer real-world insights, career advice and new perspectives.

Operated by the Canadian Centre for Advanced Leadership in Business, the program connects business undergrads and graduates with experienced business leaders through one-on-one mentoring relationships. Through these connections, mentees have opportunities to gain industry insights and expand their networks while also developing the confidence and leadership skills to navigate their next steps.
