North Island College’s Centre for Applied Research, Technology and Innovation (CARTI) researchers are inviting the community to dive into the fascinating world of seaweed at a special Seaweed Film Night on June 3 at the Tidemark Theatre, presented as part of Ocean Week Campbell River.

This engaging evening will feature a curated lineup of short films celebrating the beauty, science, and cultural importance of seaweed along our coastlines. From kelp forest ecosystems to innovative research and restoration efforts, the films aim to spark curiosity and conversation about the vital role seaweed plays in ocean health and coastal communities.

In addition to the film screenings, attendees can expect a lively, festival-style atmosphere with opportunities to connect with researchers and learn about the variety of different seaweed locally and its various roles in the ecosystem, as well as enjoy free popcorn with special popcorn seasonings designed by Chef Jonathan Frazier from NIC’s Culinary program and more.

Her dad was a skydiver. She grew up at the drop zone, watching people leap out of planes. Her own kids have experienced it too.

It's a long way from skydiving to web design and development — until she explains the through-line. The content creation, the tech, the storytelling. The pieces were always there. NIC's program just gave them a home.

Sometimes a career path makes perfect sense in hindsight.

No matter how prepared you feel, nursing throws you in at the deep end. That's not a flaw in the system — it's just the reality of the job.

This is Josh. He's an alum from the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program here at NIC. Eight years in, he's now a clinical nurse mentor at Island Health — the person new grads call when things get hard after hours.

The learning curve is steep. But you don't have to navigate it alone.

Rico was nervous about returning to school as a mature student. Would he belong? Would people judge him?

At NIC, he found a supportive community where everyone was on their own journey. Age didn't matter. Students showed up for each other.

He graduated with his Criminology Diploma and just started working in airport security. His advice to future students: "Just do it."

You're not alone. You belong here.

For years, she told herself she wasn't a learner.

This is her first time in post-secondary — and she's now in her final year of studies at NIC. Looking back, she says the experience has been healing. Not because school got easier, but because she finally found a program that engaged her in a way nothing else ever had.

If you've been carrying a story about what kind of student you are, this one might be worth watching.
