We’re excited to welcome Michelle Harris to the Alumni Association Advisory Committee (AAAC)!

With a background in event planning and environmental education, Michelle brings a wealth of experience, fresh perspectives, and a strong passion for community engagement to the committee.

A graduate of NAIT’s Biological Sciences-Renewable Resources program, Michelle now inspires the next generation as an environmental educator, volunteers with local conservation organizations, and is even a published author.

What made you choose the Biological Sciences-Renewable Resources program at NAIT?
The program came highly recommended and the ability to jump right into work after graduation was fantastic! The small class sizes and lots of hands-on learning was just what I was looking for.

✨What was your favourite spot on campus? ✨
The Nest was a great spot to unwind – it’s where classmates became more like family.

✨What is your top NAIT memory? ✨
Field work weeks were always the best times. It was a lot of work, but we got to spend time on the land, building relationships with peers, teachers, and mentors, and getting to know more about options for work after graduation.

✨What do you most enjoy about your career? ✨
As an environmental educator, I get to convert the science I learned at NAIT in a way that inspires the next generation and encourages environmental stewardship. I also get to spend time outdoors and on the land and continually learn from others from diverse environmental fields. It's never a dull moment!

✨Share a few fun facts about yourself! ✨
Early on in my career I was a paddle instructor and still enjoy canoeing and kayaking. I also enjoy just hiking, but I love to ID wildflowers along the way so strolls with me are often filled with frequent stops. I also enjoy volunteering with non-profit organizations that have impacted me in my career such as the Edmonton and Area Land Trust and Nature Alberta, either doing stewardship or guided walks. I'm a recently published author of Explore the Green Side of Edmonton, which you can find at the NAIT bookstore or through natureloop.ca.

A great first meeting of the year with our Alumni Association Advisory Committee!

Tonight, we welcomed four new members, tested our knowledge with some fun NAIT trivia, and discussed our upcoming programming. We have some fantastic events and contests lined up for our alumni community in the coming months, so stay tuned. 👀

If you see these folks at an event, be sure to say hi! They love hearing what their fellow grads have been up to since graduation, sharing information about alumni benefits, and finding ways for them to get more involved as an alum.

We’re seeking mentors for NAIT’s Career Mentorship Program!

The Career Mentorship Program connects students with experienced industry professionals to provide meaningful guidance and support for their career growth. Mentors help students gain career readiness, expand their professional networks, and develop critical soft skills essential for career development.

If you have at least one year of full-time professional work experience, a willingness to volunteer 1 hour per week throughout a 12-week period (September-December), and a genuine interest in helping students grow professionally, consider applying to be a mentor.

The Alumni Series at Ernest's Dining Room - NAIT is back for its third year! ✨

First up, on September 18, is Christine Sandford (Culinary Arts ‘08) and Roger Letourneau (APP-Cook ‘10), co-owners of Lessig Ferments and Vagabond Pop-ups.

Christine initially was interested in a career in design, but her career interests took an unexpected turn after a trip to Europe. Inspired by the restaurants there, she realized a career in culinary would be the perfect way to blend her passions for creativity, design, food, and entertaining, which led to her enrolling in NAIT’s full-time culinary arts program.

For Roger, before culinary, he considered careers in both accounting and music – one based on his analytical mind and the other on his desire to be creative. But it was through cooking, particularly fermentation, that he discovered a unique way to combine creativity, problem-solving, and precision. An apprenticeship in Paris cemented his passion and opened his eyes to the immense opportunities the culinary world could offer.

Both Christine and Roger know firsthand that career paths are rarely linear, and they hope their experiences will inspire students to explore the many opportunities within the culinary industry. They look forward to returning to campus for the Alumni Series to connect with the next generation of culinary professionals, sharing the lessons, insights, and experiences that have shaped their careers – all while creating a memorable meal for guests.

Orientation this week has us feeling nostalgic, so we’re sharing a fun photo that’s blast from the past!

Did you know that NAIT used to have a bowling alley on campus? Between 1964 and the late 1980s, the bowling alley was located in the basement of E-wing as part of a recreation area administered by NAITSA. Pinball, billiards, and other games were also available.
