U of A Days highlight | Saturday Scholars Series (Sept. 19)

Making Muscles Twitch for Science: What Nerves Can Tell Us About Neurodegenerative Disease

Presented by KSR Faculty Member Dr. Kelvin Jones

What can tiny electrical signals tell us about conditions like ALS? Every movement relies on nerve-to-muscle communication—and when that system falters, those electrical signals become critical clues.

In this session, KSR's own Dr. Kelvin Jones uses simple, practical demonstrations to explore how measuring nerve and muscle activity helps researchers track disease progression, refine biomarkers, and evaluate emerging treatments.

Join us on Oct. 1 for the 2nd annual KSR Leisure + Recreation Lecture, featuring Dr. Dan Henhawk, a Mohawk scholar at the University of Manitoba.

What is the "good life"? Amid climate disasters, can leisure be justified, or must it pause? Drawing on Indigenous critiques, Dr. Henhawk unpacks how leisure reinforces power dynamics, challenges its assumed "goodness," and re-envisions it to build resilient, community-centered futures.
