From retail management to career counselling to psychotherapy, Kenton Domize’s journey to earning his Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology degree was five years in the making.

After years of building teams and opening stores across Canada, Kenton knew it was time to pursue work that felt more aligned with who he was. His transition into career counselling revealed just how deeply mental health, past experiences, relationships and self-beliefs can shape our careers and inspired him to take the next step toward becoming a psychotherapist.

Returning to school while working full-time wasn’t easy, especially while completing a master’s degree online. But through the support of classmates, professors, colleagues, supervisors, friends and family, Kenton found a community that helped him grow both personally and professionally.

Today, he’s bringing his expertise in career counselling and psychotherapy together through his own private practice, supporting clients as they navigate career transitions, trauma, relationships and the challenges of building a life that aligns with their values.

His story is a reminder that sometimes taking the leap means giving yourself the opportunity to become exactly who you’re meant to be.

Sometimes, breaking through the ceiling means giving yourself permission to start again.

For Yorkville University alumna V. Ophelia Rigault, returning to school meant taking a chance on a new chapter. One made possible in part by the Jacob Markovitz Memorial Scholarship.

After decades in the non-profit sector, Ophelia pursued her Master of Education in Educational Leadership and discovered how education could help her not only move forward, but create opportunities for others, too.

Read her story and learn how one scholarship, one decision and a willingness to begin again helped open the next door.

When design listens, responds and protects, it can change lives.

Two Yorkville University Bachelor of Interior Design students are showing exactly what that looks like.

🎓 Salwa Asghar-Merchant has received an Award of Excellence from the Interior Designers of Canada (IDC) for Deaf Connect | When Design Listens Beyond Sound — a project exploring how interior spaces can better serve Deaf users.

🏠 Melika Gheisari, a current BID student, earned an Honourable Mention for Living Layers: A Protective Shelter for Wildfire Displacement, exploring how design can respond to the urgent needs of communities facing climate-related displacement.

Recognized through Interior Designers of Canada's Value of Design Awards: Student Competition, both projects demonstrate the power of thoughtful, evidence-based design to do more than create beautiful spaces.

We’re proud to see Yorkville University students bringing purpose and impact to the future of interior design.

What if learning online didn’t mean learning alone?

For Yorkville University MACP student Chloe Winterhalt, one of the biggest surprises of pursuing her master’s online has been just how connected she’s felt throughout the experience.

From learning alongside students with different backgrounds and perspectives, to becoming a more independent learner, to finally putting her coursework into practice during practicum. Chloe’s journey shows how much can happen beyond the classroom.

And sometimes, the most rewarding part is seeing everything you’ve learned start to come together. 🎓

Sometimes, the next chapter begins with a simple question: How can I do more?

For Michelle Matin, Yorkville University MACP alumni, that question became the catalyst for a journey from educational leadership into counselling.

When Michelle stepped into her role as Vice Principal during the COVID-19 pandemic, she found herself supporting not only students, but educators, families and entire school communities through unprecedented stress and uncertainty. She knew she wanted to do more to support the emotional and psychological wellbeing of the people she served.

So, she went back to school.

What she discovered was more than a new set of clinical skills. She rediscovered her love of learning, built meaningful connections with classmates that grew into lasting friendships, and developed a deeper curiosity about the research and evidence behind counselling practice.

Now, as a practising counsellor, Michelle is bringing those two worlds together. Education and mental health, with a goal of helping people feel seen, heard and supported.

And while graduation marked the end of her MACP journey, for Michelle, it was really the beginning of something new.

The proud moment? Hearing her son call out, "That's my mom!" as she walked across the stage.
