Happy National Indigenous History Month! is proud to commemorate and honour the First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples who are part of our community and beyond.

This month, we are encouraged to learn about the diverse communities, cultures, languages, and worldviews of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, and celebrate the invaluable contributions and gifts of Indigenous Peoples of today and throughout history.

We encourage our campus community to use this time to confront Canada’s colonial past and recognize the persistent systemic discrimination faced by Indigenous families and communities. Let’s reflect on these realities and consider how we can actively contribute to reconciliation every day.

Join us throughout the month as we share stories, resources and initiatives to foster understanding and promote Decolonization, Indigenization and Reconciliation.

Congratulations to Ava Augustine, Marah Laforge and Sandreka Rowe — the first-ever graduates of ’s Bachelor of Indigenous Environmental Science and Practice (BIESP) program. 🎓

Designed for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners, the BIESP program blends Western environmental science with Indigenous Knowledge Systems and land-based learning, equipping students with an interdisciplinary perspective grounded in science, relationships and responsibility to the land.

Throughout the program, these graduates took part in hands-on learning through summer field courses and international experiences, gaining a deeper understanding of how environmental science impacts Indigenous communities while learning directly from them.

Ava, Marah and Sandreka will cross the convocation stage at next week's graduation ceremonies.

researchers are working to address one of the biggest threats facing honey bee colonies in Canada – Varroa mites.

Paul Kelly, research and apiary manager at the Honey Bee Research Centre (HBRC), recently spoke with CBC Radio about a breeding system developed by the HBRC research team that helps beekeepers raise colonies with greater resistance to these destructive mites.

By working with beekeepers and organizations across Canada to implement the system, the team’s research can support long-term pollinator health and strengthen the agricultural systems that depend on them.

This , you can help researchers track bumble bees by simply turning on your smartphone’s Bluetooth and visiting the Arboretum. 🐝

MSc Integrative Biology student Marianne Goulet, working with Dr. Ryan Norris and Dr. Nigel Raine, has fitted fifty queen bumble bees in the Arboretum with Bluetooth radio transmitters as part of a study to better understand bee behaviour and movement.

The tiny transmitters use nearby cellular-enabled devices to share location signals, much like Apple AirTags. This means every Arboretum visitor with Bluetooth turned on helps researchers track the bees’ locations, and no personal information is shared.

From now until July, explore the Arboretum with your Bluetooth on to help support U of G bumble bee research!
