We’re proud to share that the Dalhousie School of Architecture will be well-represented at the The Royal Architectural Institute Of Canada RAIC | L'Institut royal d'architecture du Canada IRAC 2026 Conference, taking place May 5–8, 2026, in Vancouver, BC.

Associate Professor Susan Fitzgerald, PhD, Partner at FBM Architecture, will present research connected to her forthcoming book, CARE: Research Method Design Practice (Dalhousie Architectural Press, 2026). Her session on May 5 explores how centring care as a guiding principle can transform design research and professional practice—opening pathways toward more socially engaged and altruistic modes of working within architecture.

Assistant Professor Michael Faciejew will join the panel Pedagogies Under Construction, contributing to a timely conversation on teaching architecture amid rapid disciplinary change. The panel will examine infrastructural thinking, how students learn to interpret and narrate the built world, and how educators identify meaningful learning at a moment when AI can convincingly simulate mastery.

We hope Dalhousie alumni and colleagues attending RAIC 2026 will join these sessions and help celebrate the School’s ongoing contributions to architectural education, research, and practice.

🎉 Congratulations to Master of Planning student Sarah Doyle, named one of the Top Co-op Students of 2025!

Sarah completed her co-op term with UPLAND | Planning + Design, where she discovered the value of fully investing in work‑integrated learning. A highlight of her term was supporting public engagement for the City of Moncton’s St. George Street Improvement Plan, creating educational materials that are now considered best practice.

Reflecting on her experience, Sarah shared that saying yes to opportunities helped her build skills, learn from professionals, and connect classroom learning to real‑world planning.

👏 Well done, Sarah—this recognition is well deserved!

What does it mean to learn, design, and live with respect for land, culture, and community? On March 27, hear from main speakers whose lifelong work challenges conventional thinking and offers powerful alternatives rooted in collaboration, care, and Two‑Eyed Seeing.

Elder Dr. Albert Marshall of Eskasoni, Unama’ki, is a respected Mi’kmaq Elder, environmental advocate, and champion of Mi’kmaw language and knowledge. With his late wife, Dr. Murdena Marshall, he introduced Etuaptmumk—Two-Eyed Seeing—which has transformed approaches to science, health, and education nationally. A co‑creator of the Integrative Science Program at Cape Breton University, he continues to mentor institutions across Canada. He is recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award from Indspire and is an Officer of the Order of Canada. The Murdena and Albert Marshall Bursary, established in 2021 to honour the Marshalls’ lifelong dedication to education, cultural knowledge, and community wellbeing, provides financial support for Mi'kmaw students enrolled in an undergraduate program at Dalhousie University.

Richard Kroeker is a Canadian architect, educator, and Professor Emeritus at Dalhousie University. His work bridges design, culture, and environmental stewardship, with award‑winning projects recognized by the World Architecture Festival, the Chicago Athenaeum, and the HOLCIM Foundation. A 2023 Order of Canada inductee, he has taught internationally and collaborated for decades with Elder Dr. Albert Marshall, exploring how Indigenous ways of knowing can reshape architectural practice. His work focuses on supporting communities and ecological futures through thoughtful, place‑rooted design.

On March 27, join Elder Dr. Albert Marshall and Professor Emeritus Richard Kroeker for an intimate conversation on the history of Etuaptmumk and its influence on design, education, and living in a respectful relationship with the natural world.

Etuaptmumk, or Two‑Eyed Seeing, is a Mi’kmaw guiding principle introduced by Elder Marshall in 2004. It recognizes the gift of multiple perspectives valued by many Indigenous peoples, teaching us to see from one eye with the strengths of Indigenous knowledges and ways of knowing, and from the other eye with the strengths of Western knowledges and ways of knowing. Elder Marshall’s teachings have shaped conversations across education, environmental stewardship, health, design, and community engagement.

The evening will open with a traditional prayer led by Dalhousie Elder‑in‑Residence Ann LaBillois, followed by words of welcome and introductions by Dalhousie’s Vice-Provost Indigenous Relations, John R. Sylliboy. Elder Charlotte Bernard from Sipekne'katik First Nation will round out the event with traditional drumming, leading attendees into the reception.

Space is limited! Register early for in‑person or virtual attendance to secure your spot.

Join the Dalhousie Architecture Students Association (DASA) for the next session in their Lecture Series.

The DASA lecture team is pleased to invite you to a talk on place‑based sustainability featuring Rosemarie Lohnes, founder of Helping Nature Heal.

Lohnes brings a unique combination of architectural training and deep experience working with coastal ecosystems. Her work offers valuable insight into how design practices can respond to, support, and be informed by the specific ecological conditions of the Atlantic region.

Lohnes’ perspective demonstrates how thoughtful, site‑specific strategies can move beyond broad sustainability goals to engage directly with local materials, ecosystems, and community needs. This session will be of particular interest to those exploring how architectural practice can meaningfully intersect with ecological stewardship.
