Members of the Weldon Gardening Club have been busy as of late: weeding beds, prepping containers, and planting seeds and transplants as another growing season gets underway!

Building on the successes and lessons learned from the past two years, an effort was made to plant more fruits and vegetables this spring which traditionally ripen later in the year, so (🤞) there will be more available to harvest and share with everyone when our students come back in September!

Stay tuned for updates 🌱

During the Schulich School of Law's Spring Convocation on Friday, May 29, the Honourable Senator Judy White, KC, (LLB '97) delivered an inspiring commencement address to the Class of 2026.

A proud Mi'kmaq woman from Flat Bay and a Dalhousie Law School alumna, White became the first Indigenous Senator from Newfoundland and Labrador and the first female Mi'kmaq appointed to the Senate of Canada. Her career has been defined by leadership, advocacy, and a commitment to Indigenous rights and reconciliation.

During her speech, she emphasized that a legal education carries both privilege and responsibility, urging graduates to use their knowledge with courage, integrity, and a commitment to advancing justice and fairness. Drawing on Mi'kmaw teachings, she also highlighted the importance of kindness, of being a ‘good relative’, and considering the long-term impact of one's actions on future generations.

White concluded her address with the following message to the graduating class:

“As you leave here, you carry more than a degree. You carry a responsibility to the people and communities you serve. You carry the ability to influence systems that affect lives in profound ways. And you carry the opportunity, the rare and powerful opportunity to contribute to a more just and equitable Canada.

So go forward with confidence, but also with humility. Lead with knowledge, but also with compassion. And remember that the law, at its best, is not only about rules. It is about people.

As you step into your futures, hold tight to these values. Think of the future impacts of your work and be a good relative. You will never be led astray when you navigate the world with compassion as your guide.”

Meet Alexi Grewal, a member of the 2026 Schulich Law graduating class! 🎉

Alexi had wanted to live on the East Coast since her undergrad, so she jumped at the chance to move from Toronto to Halifax when she received her offer letter from the Schulich School of Law.

She was drawn to the law school’s reputation for collegiality, as well as its commitment to the Weldon Tradition of unselfish public service. She eagerly gave back to her community through her involvement with the Dalhousie Student Advocacy Service, the Dalhousie Youth Legal Education Society, and the Dalhousie Family Law Society (DFLS), which she founded. In her role at DFLS, she advocated to send the first-ever Schulich Law team to participate in the Walsh Family Law Moot Competition in Toronto.

Although she has many memories of her time at law school, she says it is her semester at Dalhousie Legal Aid Service that will forever be her favourite. “It was such a unique opportunity to gain practical exposure to different types of law, all while managing the stresses of client files and competing deadlines,” Alexi explains. “I feel more prepared going into articling, having worked at the Clinic."

After graduation and the Bar exams, she is looking forward to making time to travel and relax before beginning her articles at Epstein Cole back in Toronto, the family law firm where she worked during her 2L summer.

Congratulations, Alexi!

Congratulations to Schulich Law Associate Professor Naiomi Walqwan Metallic, KC, (BA ’02, LLB ’05), Chancellor’s Chair in Aboriginal Law and Policy, who was the recipient of the 2026 Indspire Award for Law & Justice at an event held on May 14 in Halifax.

Considered the highest honour the Indigenous community bestows upon its own achievers, the Indspire Awards celebrate excellence across diverse fields and elevate role models for future generations, recognizing outstanding Indigenous professionals and youth whose achievements, leadership, and service are strengthening communities across Turtle Island.

Metallic is a Mi’kmaq lawyer and legal scholar from Listuguj Mi’kmaq First Nation in Quebec. Her work demonstrates how law, when rooted in Indigenous knowledge, can become a powerful tool for justice and reconciliation. Her contributions, through teaching, advocacy, and scholarship, have helped reshape how Canadian law engages with Indigenous rights, governance, and well-being.

“I was deeply honoured to be selected for the Law & Justice Award and so happy that I could receive it in Kjipuktuk (Halifax), surrounded by friends, family, students, and colleagues who were cheering me on. It felt simultaneously amazing and overwhelming – but in a good way!” she shares. “I am so grateful for the love and support I have received from so many, including my Schulich School of Law community of colleagues, students, and fellow alumni.”

Meet Josh Hutchinson, a member of the 2026 Schulich Law graduating class! 🎉

While he was born and raised in Northern Ontario, Josh’s connection to the East Coast began long before university through his family roots in Nova Scotia, where some of his fondest childhood memories took place. The law school’s reputation for community and collegiality, combined with the opportunity to explore Halifax as an adult and experience life here as a student, made Schulich Law a natural fit for him.

As a student, Josh was involved with several societies, including serving on the executive committee of the Law Students’ Society as vice president, Student Life, in his final year of law school. He says one of his favourite memories from his time at Weldon was having the opportunity to plan orientation activities for the incoming 1L cohort and watching the first-year students be introduced to the city and community that has given him so much.

He shares he will miss the day-to-day interactions, conversations, and chance encounters in the Weldon Law Building the most. “It was such a privilege to attend law school with so many brilliant people, and I will miss bonding over the highs and lows of the student experience.”

After graduation, Josh is looking forward to moving to Toronto to article at Smockum Zarnett LLP, but not before heading back to Thunder Bay to relax with friends and family, and enjoy time outdoors.

Congratulations, Josh!
