Why does tourism matter?

We asked a few people from our TRU Tourism community, and while the answers are different, there’s a lot that connects them.

People. Places. Communities. Experiences.

What does tourism mean to you?

As we get ready to head back to the classroom, we know summer is one of the busiest times of year for travel.

So, we’d love to hear from you.

Where did your summer travels take you?
Maybe it was somewhere completely new, a favourite place you went back to or a weekend spent exploring closer to home.

Where did you go, and what made it memorable? 👇

Research doesn't always happen in a lab.

Sometimes it starts with a simple question: Why do we order more food than we can eat?

TRU Tourism faculty member Dr. Yaou Hu's latest research explores how menus' communication of portion sizes can influence what people order.

Her research found that when diners have a clearer idea of how much food they're ordering, they're less likely to over-order and waste food. It's a simple idea that could help restaurants reduce waste while helping customers make more informed choices.

With wildfires burning across British Columbia and across the country, many of us are thinking about the immediate impact on people, communities and the landscapes we love.

But wildfire is also a reminder that there's important work happening long before a fire starts.

Understanding how we manage forests, learning from Indigenous approaches to land stewardship, and exploring how communities can become more resilient all play a role in preparing for the future.

That's why TRU offers the Sociocultural Dynamics of Wildfire Certificate. It's a program built around understanding the human side of wildfire and the relationships between people, land and community.

Did you know that 62% of adults say one of their earliest childhood memories is a family vacation?

Research suggests there's a reason for that. Our brains are more likely to hold onto experiences that are new, meaningful and shared with the people around us.

But those trips are about more than the memories we take home.

Every vacation supports hotels, restaurants, attractions, transportation providers, guides, local businesses and the communities that welcome visitors.

Tourism isn't just about where people go.

It's about the people and places that make those experiences possible.

It's always fun to wonder where everyone ends up after convocation. 🎓🐺

We asked a few of our graduates what they're doing next and what their dream job is. Here's what they wrote.

Congratulations again to the Class of 2026. We hope you keep us posted along the way.
