There’s a lot to be excited about as the fall semester approaches — and for TRU law student John Hawthorne, one exciting opportunity is already on the horizon for 2027.

Hawthorne has been selected for a judicial law clerkship with the Supreme Court of B.C., where he’ll work alongside judges on legal research, decisions and other cases.

"It’s a really cool position,” Hawthorne said. “The job will entail doing legal research for judges, helping them edit their reasons for decision in different cases and just assisting judges in whatever they need me to do. I’m excited to get started.”

He’ll begin the clerkship in 2027, following his articling year with Fulton and Company in Kamloops.

The back-to-school season means new beginnings and, sometimes, a familiar face by your side.

Childhood friends Brendan Semchuk and Adam Toor grew up playing hockey in Kamloops before reuniting years later at TRU Law. 🏒

They brought the teamwork and determination they learned through hockey to their studies, graduating together in June 2026.

Now, Toor has secured a prestigious position as a Judicial Law Clerk at the Supreme Court of British Columbia and will join Dentons as an associate in 2027. Semchuk is currently articling at Harper Grey LLP.

Their story is a reminder that the skills you build along the way can take you places you never expected.

From Taiwan, China, Mexico, South Korea and Japan, nearly 300 learners joined TRU’s International Training Centre this summer for short-term, non-credit programs.

Students learned new skills, connected with faculty, staff and community members, and explored Kamloops and Secwepemcúl’ecw, the traditional and unceded territory of the Secwépemc.

Short-term programming is helping TRU create meaningful global connections, one experience at a time.
