Queen's University Alumni is pleased to announce a $7 million gift that will help advance research in neurological and mobility science, with the potential to improve health across the lifespan. This contribution from The Hilary and Galen Weston Foundation will support two projects:

Dr. Jagdeep Walia is advancing gene therapy research for infantile Tay-Sachs and Sandhoff disease, offering hope to families facing devastating diagnoses.

Dr. Stephen Scott and collaborators Vince DePaul and Kevin Deluzio are using robotics to detect mobility and cognitive changes earlier in older adults. The funding will enable the research team to follow 400 individuals over two years, reaching rural and indigenous communities across southeastern Ontario.

From the classroom to the Olympic track, there’s no fixed finish line. We're so proud to spotlight Queen's University Bachelor of Health Sciences first year student Hallie Clarke, who represented Canada in skeleton at the 2026 Winter Olympics

In our interview, Hallie breaks down what most people get wrong about being an Olympic athlete, and shares some great advice for students looking to balance high-performance sport with a demanding degree.

“Vulnerable populations with disorders like schizophrenia have a mortality rate of approximately 20 years earlier than their peers. Often, when they’re diagnosed with colon cancer, it’s at later stages such as stage-four,” says Providence Care Community Psychiatrist and Senior Associate Researcher Dr. Oyedeji Ayonrinde.

A new study led by Dr. Ayonrinde, in collaboration with Queen's University Health Sciences reveals significant delays in colon cancer diagnosis for adults with serious mental illness.

The study found:
▪️Diagnosis often happens after symptoms appear, not through screening
▪️People wait 1.5-2 months longer for a diagnosis
▪️Those affected were more often younger, female, lower-income and managing multiple health conditions

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭:
Providence Care is advancing research to improve early detection and strengthen care for vulnerable populations, with a focus on making colon cancer screening more equitable and accessible for people with serious mental illness.

“Patients play a crucial role in advancing medical research,” says Dr. Kerstin de Wit, co-investigator on a recent international study published in The New England Journal of Medicine that identified safer treatment options for patients with blood clots.

Teams at the Queen’s Department of Emergency Medicine and the
Kingston Health Sciences Centre assisted with recruiting and enrolling patients for this important study.

Like many Queen's students this February, Hallie Clarke had a discussion post due in OnQ. She just had to submit it after hurling herself headfirst down an Olympic ice track at 140km/hr.

In addition to juggling international competition circuits and rigorous training schedules, Hallie and fellow health sciences student Alison Mackie are two Team Canada Olympic athletes currently completing their undergraduate degrees at Queen’s. We asked them what it’s like to compete against the best in the world while navigating coursework, deadlines, and everything else that comes with being a student athlete. Turns out there’s no fixed finish line ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ebFEBSKS

Dr. Shahirose Premji, the Sally Smith Chair in Nursing at Queen's University, is advancing research on women's mental health and well-being during pregnancy.

For over 17 years, she worked as a neonatal nurse practitioner in communities around the world. Those experiences now shape her research on improving perinatal mental health outcomes.

In her Cinq à Sept Research Talk, Dr. Premji shares personal stories from
Tanzania to Pakistan, and how they have led to her vision to establish a centre of excellence in perinatal mental health here in Kingston.
