As we celebrate International Women's Day 2024, the theme of "Inspire Inclusion" highlights the importance of fostering an environment where all women feel valued, respected, and empowered. Inclusion is about creating spaces where diverse voices are heard, perspectives are respected, and everyone has equal opportunities to thrive. International Women's Day is about empowering women to reach their full potential, pursue dreams and have equal opportunities to succeed. It's also about empowering our male counterparts to become allies in the fight for gender equality, and to work towards creating a more inclusive and equitable environment. On this day, the world celebrates the accomplishments of women and highlights the achievements of those who have broken barriers, shattered stereotypes, and paved the way for future generations. At Smith Engineering we are celebrating 80 years of women in engineering. Significant milestones include the first female Professor, Professor Emerita Genevieve Dumas, who joined the faculty in 1986; and, Professor Emerita Caroline Hanson, FCAE, the first female Department Head in 1996 in Metallurgical, now Mechanical and Materials Engineering. Professor Emerita Kimberly Woodhouse, FCAE, was the first female Dean in 2007. At Smith Engineering, we aim to tap into the diverse perspectives and talents that women bring to the profession. It is crucial to address the systemic barriers and biases that can hinder women's progress in engineering. As we celebrate International Women's Day, let us commit ourselves to continuing the progress we have made towards gender equality while acknowledging the work that still needs to be done.
