General information

As a new group, our main aim is to begin a larger initiative through a few specific events. The first stages are about connecting individuals in the department of English Language & Literature, History, Philosophy, and Classics at Queen's through a series of workshops, presentations and training sessions designed to support those coping with engaging in humanities scholarship and living in a campus still developing principles and priorities of inclusivity. Our hope is that this first set of initiatives will develop into more ongoing support, activities, seminars and workshops.

Scholars of Colour at Watson Hall- Queen’s University

Who are we? Last term, a couple of graduate students of colour in the department of History & English Language & Literature at Queen’s organized an informal group for students seeking and offering support within the spaces they frequent the most and among scholars of similar cultural backgrounds and upbringing, with shared experiences of moving or adapting to a different culture and language, and with a similar understanding of the challenges of our related disciplines. In an effort to both extend this initiative to current and future scholars of colour in our departments and to gain access to University resources for our community at Watson Hall, we decided to make this group an official club with AMS/SGPS.

How can our association help? By providing a supportive community for students of colour in English, Philosophy, History, and the Classics, Scholars of Colour at Watson Hall hopes to decrease feelings of alienation and isolation. By sharing information about resources supporting mental health and issues especially relevant to international students and students of colour, and by providing collegiate support within and across programs we hope to foster a positive and welcoming academic environment that will promote better student wellness and time to completion rates.

What's next? In the upcoming weeks we will be hosting our first "Meet and Greet," where we will officially introduce our club and its mission to all members of the Watson Hall community. We will also be posting a list of our upcoming events and activities. Stay tuned for more!
