Looking to build community, strengthen your leadership skills, and connect with other Indigenous students at Western?

ICSLP is a unique, community-centred program that brings together First Nations, Inuit, and Métis students from all years and disciplines. Whether you're adjusting to university life in your first year or preparing to graduate, ICSLP offers a welcoming space to share a meal, connect with peers, and build meaningful relationships with local Indigenous leaders, artists, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers.

Through meaningful programming with Indigenous students and leaders, ICSLP works to:
✨ Create an inclusive community that values Indigenous perspectives and knowledge systems.
✨ Equip students with skills for leadership roles within both Indigenous and non-Indigenous contexts.
✨ Help students navigate the academic environment while maintaining strong cultural and community ties.

What happens in ICSLP?
🍽️ Hour 1: Share a meal, connect with peers, participate in check-ins, and build community.
🎨 Hour 2: Join guest speakers, workshops, cultural teachings, leadership sessions, cooking demonstrations, and more.

Participants also gain valuable extracurricular and leadership experience through opportunities focused on Indigenous knowledge, well-being, academic engagement, career development, and leadership development.

🎉 Meet our new Administrative Assistant! 🎉

We’re excited to welcome Donnie Johnson to the team as our new Administrative Assistant!

Donnie is Tuscarora from Six Nations of the Grand River and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology. He has returned to Western to complete his Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics.

In his role, Donnie supports day-to-day administrative operations and helps keep things running smoothly for Indigenous students, staff, and visitors at the ISC. If you have general inquiries about the ISC, the newsletter, or ISC events, Donnie is your go-to contact!

In his spare time, he likes reading, watching movies, and trying new recipes.

Join the Indigenous Students' Association, Indigenous Student Centre, and Western Sustainability for an Anishinaabe Water Walk.

The event will begin with a talk by Wahsayzee Deleary, Loon Clan. Water is life, and this event will raise awareness around the sacredness of water and ways that we can help as humans to protect water. Participants will be encouraged to make their own connection to water as we walk along the Medway Creek. The first Mother Earth Water Walk took place in 2023 and was lead by Anishinabe grandmother Josephine Mandamin-bah around Lake Superior.

We will meet behind Saugeen-Maitland Hall at the volleyball court. After the opening, we will walk along the river as a group, with a shorter, more accessible route option also available. The walk will end behind Westminster Hall.

Please reach out if you require accessibility accommodations, including for service animals.

Attendees are encouraged to wear orange in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Ribbon skirts are traditional attire for Water Walks and are welcome, but not required.

Registration is encouraged. Drop-ins are welcome, but we kindly ask that you register in advance if possible.
This event is open to all members of the campus community, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, including faculty, staff, and students. We hope to see you there!

📣 Local First Nations Scholarship Program – Western University

Applications are open for Western’s Local First Nations Scholarship Program, supporting eligible undergraduate, graduate, and professional students studying full- or part-time at Western’s main campus.

🎓 Approximately 8 scholarships are available each academic year, depending on available funding and the number of eligible applicants.

💰 Scholarship Value:
• Full-time students: $3,000 per course, up to $15,000/year
• Part-time students: $3,000 per course, up to $9,000/year

The scholarship is available to students affiliated with:

• Aamjiwnaang First Nation
• Caldwell First Nation
• Chippewas of the Thames First Nation
• Kettle and Stony Point First Nation
• Eelūnaapèewii Lahkèewiit Delaware Nation
• Munsee Delaware First Nation
• Oneida Nation of the Thames
• Bkejwanong Territory

📝 To apply: Submit an essay (up to 2,000 words), reference letter, most recent transcripts, and complete Western’s Student Declaration of Indigenous Citizenship or Membership.
