Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories

Finding your place at university can be life-changing, and for Soumya Ananth, that journey has been shaped by leadership, community, and a passion for helping others succeed.

A second-year Political Science student entering her third year, Soumya has embraced opportunities across the Faculty of Social Science to make a positive impact. As Charity Events Commissioner with the Social Science Students' Council, she helped organize initiatives focused on mental health awareness and community engagement, bringing students together around causes that matter.

Her commitment to supporting others extends beyond student government. As a Residence Soph, Soumya helped first-year students navigate the transition to university life by creating welcoming spaces, building connections, and fostering a strong sense of belonging. This year, she will continue that work as a Social Science Soph, helping incoming students discover opportunities, build friendships, and find their place within the Western community.

Soumya believes some of the most meaningful experiences at university happen when students step outside their comfort zones, get involved, and connect with others. Her story highlights the supportive and vibrant community that makes the Faculty of Social Science such a special place to learn and grow.

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. İpek Ece Şener as the newest member of our department! Dr. Sener comes to us with a PhD from Washington University in St. Louis, and more recently from Harvard University’s Department of Government where she was a College Fellow. Her research has been published in top outlets such as the Journal of Conflict Resolution, the Journal of Peace Research, and World Politics.

Dr. Sener conducts research in the area of International Relations, broadly, and has specific expertise on topics such as radicalization, activist-militant relations, state repression and civil conflict. She has three streams of active research: the interaction between activist actions, support for militancy and state actions; the strategy behind militant propaganda; and how international actors and institutions influence civil wars. She is also involved with the Data-driven Analysis of Peace Project.

We are very excited about the contributions Dr. Sener will make to our department. In 2026-7, Dr. Sener will be teaching Politics of the Middle East (PS3329f), Global Security (4408g) and PS9516b (Survey Design).
