Why does tipping suddenly feel so uncomfortable?

Many Canadians are asking themselves this question as tip prompts appear in more and more unexpected places, from fast-food drive-thrus to auto repair shops and self-service kiosks. A new study from researchers at Western University helps explain why these moments can leave customers feeling awkward, pressured or even frustrated.

Published in The Conversation, the research by Professor Bonnie Simpson and Assistant Professor Jamie Hyodo explores the psychology behind what many are calling “tip fatigue.” Drawing on surveys from more than 1,200 Canadians, the study found that people react negatively when tipping appears in places where it traditionally has not been expected.

The reason goes deeper than simply spending extra money.

For decades, tipping has worked as a shared social norm in Canada. In settings like restaurants, salons and barber shops, tipping made sense because customers received personalized service and workers often depended on tips to supplement lower wages. People tipped because it felt socially understood and appropriate.

But digital payment systems have changed the landscape.

Today, customers are often asked to tip before receiving service, during self-checkout experiences or in situations with little to no human interaction. According to the research, these unexpected tip prompts can create what psychologists call “reactance,” a feeling people experience when they believe their freedom of choice is being pressured or restricted.

The result? Lower satisfaction with the experience, less positive feelings toward the business and reduced likelihood of returning.

Interestingly, the researchers also found that even small signals giving customers permission not to tip helped reduce negative reactions. In other words, when consumers feel they still have a genuine choice, the interaction becomes more comfortable.

This research shines a light on how rapidly changing technology is reshaping everyday social interactions and how businesses may need to rethink customer experience in an era of expanding digital tipping culture.

The study also acknowledges the contribution of Jennie Choi, a graduate from Western University’s DAN Department of Management.

✨ Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories ✨

Meet Meaghan Furlano , a second-year PhD student in Sociology at Western University whose passion for research is helping her explore some of today’s most important conversations around gender, media, and society.

Meaghan’s journey began as an undergraduate student at Western, where inspiring courses and supportive professors encouraged her to pursue graduate studies and research opportunities. Today, her work examines anti-feminist movements online and the growing influence of “tradwife” culture on social media.

Beyond the classroom, Meaghan has built meaningful connections through research leadership roles, international learning opportunities, and mentorship experiences that have shaped both her academic and personal growth.

“I am constantly moved by what I learn through my studies,” Meaghan says. “They have made me a more empathetic, radical, and curious person.”

Her story is a wonderful example of how students at the Faculty of Social Science are creating impact through curiosity, dedication, and community.

🌿 Wisdom Wednesday: Humans of Social Science 🌿

What shapes the way we understand organizations, work, and people?

In this week’s Wisdom Wednesday feature, we spotlight Professor Geraint Harvey from the DAN Department of Management & Organizational Studies. From growing up in a former coal-mining town in South Wales to exploring philosophy, labour, and human organizations, Harvey’s story reflects how personal experiences can shape academic curiosity.

He shares why people and their stories remain at the centre of his work, the importance of human-centred management, and how even difficult feedback can become a meaningful part of growth as an educator.

Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories

Leadership, community, and meaningful experiences have shaped Jeffrey Osaro’s journey at Western University.

As a third-year BMOS Accounting student, Jeffrey has taken full advantage of opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. From completing a Co-op placement at KPMG to supporting students as a Perth Soph and serving in leadership roles with student clubs, Jeffrey has built a university experience focused on growth, mentorship, and connection.

Growing up in Toronto’s Jane and Finch community inspired Jeffrey to give back and support others through leadership and community involvement. His dedication was recognized through a full scholarship from the Pinball Clemons Foundation, an achievement that continues to motivate him to create positive change.

“There’s only two things you leave university with, a degree and memories; so do your best to make lots of them,” Jeffrey says.

Meet Our Students: Celebrating Success Stories

We are proud to spotlight Renad Aladham, a fourth-year double major in Psychology and Sociology at Western University.

Renad has always been curious about human behaviour and the experiences that shape people’s lives. “I have always been interested in understanding why people think and behave the way they do,” she says. Through her studies, Renad has explored both individual behaviour and the social environments that influence how people grow and connect with others.

One of the most meaningful experiences in her program was a Child Development course that deepened her understanding of emotional, social and cognitive growth. The course strengthened her commitment to pursuing a future career where she can support people in reaching their full potential.

Renad also conducted independent research in social psychology, examining how social media use can affect self-esteem among young adults. Through this experience, she developed strong research and analytical skills while learning how psychological ideas apply in everyday life.

Outside the classroom, Renad has made a significant impact on campus. As President of the Jordanian Cultural Club at Western, she leads initiatives that celebrate culture and create opportunities for students to connect. She has also mentored first-year students as a Residence Soph, helping them adjust to university life and build a sense of belonging on campus.

“Seeing the impact of our events and the connections students make through them has been incredibly rewarding,” Renad shares.

Discover Renad’s full story and learn more about how Social Science students at Western are shaping their futures.
