Happy Odometer Day!

Each year we set aside time for the opportunity to learn a little bit about the odometer. This instrument indicates the distance traveled by a vehicle by tracking the number of rotations of a tire. The first odometers were developed in the 1600s for wagons and other horse-drawn vehicles to measure distance traveled. Arthur P. and Charles H. Warner developed the first odometer for the automobile in 1903.

A quick tip on how to read an odometer:

Look for a small rectangle that contains 5-6 numbers. It is typically located near the speedometer. It might be digital or mechanical depending on the year of your vehicle. Once located, simply make note of the numbers displayed and this will indicate the number of kms or miles traveled. You're done!

Each year, Canada marks Veterans' Week from November 4 to 11 to remember those who have served and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace. We honour the risks and sacrifices made by those who have sought to defend and promote Canadian values and make the world a safer place.

Remembrance Day is observed across Canada each year on November 11.

Wherever you may be on November 11, we encourage students and employees to find respectful ways to acknowledge the service and sacrifices of the men and women of all backgrounds in our armed forces. We hope you will honour the memory of the men and women who have died in the service of peace, remember the tragedy and terror of war and pay tribute to those who currently work to protect the freedoms of our nation and others around the world.

Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day will coincide with Orange Shirt Day, an awareness day that involves wearing orange clothing to honour and commemorate Indigenous children forced into the residential school system.

Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation share common goals of honouring residential school victims, their families and communities; creating meaningful discussion and reflection about the damaging and intergenerational effects of anti-Indigenous racism; and commemorating the histories and ongoing contributions of the First Peoples in our region, on whose traditional lands our communities stand.

We encourage all students and staff to take time on September 30 to listen, learn, reflect and seek starting points to work together for a better community for all peoples.
