11/09/2021

A coalition of healthcare organizations in Québec has launched this letter + petition for a carbon-neutral healthcare system in Québec striving for as many signatures as possible until November 28th, as COP26 takes off in Glasgow, climate threats to health are growing, and 200+ medical editors urged healthcare leaders to push for carbon-neutral health systems.

The petition is up for consideration by the National Assembly, so it is a historic (and might be our only) chance to achieve a governmental resolution for sustainable healthcare in Québec, which is required to scale up current efforts to actually achieve sustainable healthcare in the province.

I invite you to sign & share this letter + petition (https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/pour-un-virage-durable-du-reseau-de-la-sante-et-des-services-sociaux/) as much as possible to your personal/student/professional networks over the next weeks, and invite them to sign & share the initiative too. We are aiming to reach the maximum of health professionals, students and citizens in Québec.

This plan for sustainable healthcare in Québec can also help us solve many other issues in quality, efficiency and humanity of care, as demonstrated by the carbon-neutrality plan of the UK health system (the NHS). To help sharing, we have prepared this communications guide and posters https://docs.google.com/document/d/16Lth96bQD6q5ib4Z4Ec0Kx-85ltVTdeZztd--BALaPQ/edit?usp=sharing

Also, there is a webinar on November 23rd with Dr. Nick Watts, who directs "Net-Zero" efforts in the National Health Service (the UK healthcare system) and other changemakers in Québec. I invite you to sign up here (https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_rpU4fTo3Th6Afb18FmLLRA) if you wish to learn more about what sustainable healthcare entails for Québec.

We are only starting to spread the letter + petition now, as the petition was published much earlier than we anticipated, and it took us some time to harness our limited volunteer energies & times. Still, we are working hard across our partners to make the petition gain momentum over the next weeks. Your help to sign & spread the petition would be deeply appreciated.

76th UNGA Side Event

Roundtable Discussion: Community understanding and trust as key drivers for vaccinations in Africa
24th Sept, 3:00pm - 5:00pm (EAT)

Trust is a key component of successful roll-out of any vaccination program.

Yet – trust building and acceptance around vaccines, and COVID-19 vaccines in particular, remain an under-explored area. And when explored it often lacks a focus on people and community – the human element. There is merit in changing the way the world thinks about vaccine acceptance in Africa. As Director of Africa CDC, Dr John Nkengasong, has made a call to action: “Let’s find out what is the wall between us and the communities, and how we bridge the trust gap”.

I would like to invite you to participate in a project about the experience of nursing education for Indigenous individuals in Québec.
The goal of this project is to learn about the experiences of Indigenous individuals during their journeys to becoming a nurse intending to practice in Québec and to explore possible ways for nursing education to meet the needs of Indigenous students. To participate you need to:
Self-Identify as Indigenous
Be a practicing nurse or nursing student
Practice or intend to practice in the province of Québec
Be 18 years old or older
Speak English or French
Participation involves:
A conversation of approximately 30 to 90 minutes
Participating by phone, or by Zoom, with or without the camera on.
Potentially a second conversation at a later date to confirm correct interpretation of information shared
I would like to offer you a small gift of a value of 30$ to show gratitude for your participation.
If you have questions or are interested in participating, please email me to let me know at [email protected]
This project is supervised by Professor Dr.Susan Drouin,R.N., Ingram School of Nursing, McGill University.
