McGill University Office of Sustainability

McGill University Office of Sustainability Building a culture of sustainability. Home of the largest Sustainability Projects Fund in Canada.

The Office of Sustainability's mission is to create a culture of sustainability at McGill - to encourage and unite the efforts of students, faculty, staff and administrators to incorporate principles of sustainability in university operations, campus living and learning and in its relations with the broader community. We explore ways in which McGill can integrate social, environmental and economic

considerations to provide input to the University decisions, and develop partnerships that encourage and facilitate the cooperation of all members of the McGill community in applying the principles of sustainability. Don’t forget that you can cool down at McGill Libraries this summer ☀️📚. As Montreal summers continue to bring higher temperatures, it’s important to stay safe and hydrated on campus. Visit McGill Libraries, our designated cooling centres, where you can take a break from the heat and recharge.

The Barton Buzz Patch (named by McGillians) has been planted! 🐝🌱

Last week, an amazing crew of student and staff volunteers planted the first of McGill’s new Biodiversity Zones on the Mac campus. Host to 20 native plant species, this wildflower garden will soon be buzzing with pollinators like monarch butterflies, bumblebees, and hummingbirds.

To support our local ecosystem even further, McGill is also reducing mowing in two nearby areas to let native grasses and flowers flourish.

Keep an eye out for how these areas change over the summer, and for Downtown Campus’ new biodiversity zones.

Building on some great momentum, McGill Libraries are taking their commitment to sustainability even further. With support from the Sustainability Projects Fund (SPF), the Libraries have joined the Sustainable Libraries Certification Program (SLCP), embedding sustainability across the entire network.

Here's some of the work they’ve already put in:
🏅 Every library unit has earned at least a Bronze Sustainable Workplace Certification
♻️ A recent waste audit will improve recycling and composting efforts
📖 The Indigenous Borrower Card Program expands access to library materials for Indigenous community members
🌡️ Libraries are designated cooling centres during heat waves

We're excited to see the continued impact of their efforts as McGill Libraries continue their journey toward their SLCP certification!
