Hello SIS Students,

We are very pleased to announce the results of the contest for the new MISSA logo, and a huge thank you to all the students who submitted designs!

After receiving votes from 50 individuals, the most popular submission was by Anna Dai. Congratulations 🤩

Here's what Anna has to say about what inspired the design:

"My inspiration was from writing codes with python lately for my 630 data mining class project, and thought designing with a cyber/tech ish font might be fun 😆"

The new logo will start to appear on MISSA social media and be used for future communications.

MISSA is holding a Spring photo contest for you to show off your photography skills. Take pictures of what spring means for you, and post them on the School of Information Studies Students page.

The contest will run until April 2, 2023. The top 3 winners will receive a prize!

Reminder that the deadline to send in your MISSA election nominations is today: Friday, February 24th, at 5:00 pm ET! Joining MISSA will be a great way for you to get involved in the SIS community. There is also no campaigning required!

Hello SIS Students!

Come on down to Thompson House and join us for a memorable evening of fun and a chance to win! We are excited to be hosting PowerPoint Karaoke on Friday, February 17, 2023, from 6:00-8:00PM in Boardroom 404, Thompson House (3650 McTavish St, Montreal, Quebec H3A 1Y2).

What is PPT Karaoke?

PPT Karaoke is a game of improvisation and creativity! Each participant will present a randomly selected deck of PowerPoint slides that they have never seen before. This is also a great chance to improve your presenting and public speaking skills!
All participants must present! Presentations will be between 3 and 6 minutes.

We highly encourage each participant to submit a deck of slides (around 10-20 slides) that we will use during the game. If you're feeling creative, feel free to submit more than one!
The best presenter of the evening (determined by popular vote) will receive a 15$ gift card to anywhere of their choosing!

All are invited to come to Thompson House before and/or after the party! Unfortunately, Thompson House does not allow food or drink in the boardroom, but that doesn't mean you cannot get a bite to eat or a drink before and after the event!

MISSA is in need of a new logo. Will you be the one to create it?

From now till March 8th, MISSA will be accepting submissions for a new logo design. The creator(s) of the winning design will get a $50 gift card to the place of their choice.

Submissions should come from current SIS students working alone or in a group.

The design should respect the following requirements:
- Follow the McGill Visual Identity Guide: https://www.mcgill.ca/visual-identity/visual-identity-guide
- “MISSA” should be included and well represented in the design
- Minimum size: 200*200px. Square version is suggested.
- Submission Deadline: March 8th, 11:59pm

After the submission closes designs will be evaluated for adherence to the above guidelines. Designs that follow the guidelines will be admitted to a popular vote by the SIS membership.

Up to 3 designs may be submitted per person/group.

The ABQLA Mentor program pairs students with professionals in the LIS field and is a great way to learn more about being an information professional and explore the career choices available to you. To take part, simply fill in the form below and you will be contacted soon with more information. We try our best to match students with someone already working in areas that interest them. If you have any additional questions, please contact the ABQLA Student Chapter at [email protected]. Getting the most out of your mentorship: 1. Create goals and be clear about them. Figure out what you hope to achieve through seeking out a mentor and be clear to your mentor about what you are looking for. 2. Establish how and how often you’re going to communicate. 3. Manage your expectations. Mentoring takes time, so be respectful of your mentor’s time and other priorities. 4. Get to know your mentor. Ask your mentor about their career path and goals, and where they see themselves going. Ask them how they balance work and life. You may get ideas about things you’ve never considered or valued. 5. Arrange a variety of activities. You can discuss activity ideas with your mentor so that you can find what works for you and for your mentorship goals and objectives. Some suggestions include professional social or educational events like those held by ABQLA sections, reviewing your CV or cover letter, or doing a mock interview. 6. Seek out other mentors. You can have more than one mentor, so make networking one of your goals.
