Congratulations to Dr. Bridget Andersen for winning the McGill Dr. Allie Vibert Douglas Astrophysics PhD Thesis Prize!

“During my time at the Trottier Space Institute, I’ve been fortunate to be in the right place, at the right time, to work on cutting-edge advancements in our understanding of the radio universe with my amazing colleagues in the CHIME/FRB Collaboration," Andersen says. For her thesis, she helped build new telescopes to precisely pinpoint mysterious explosions from distant galaxies known as Fast Radio Bursts or FRB for short. She also studied how the techniques astronomers use to link these bursts to their host galaxies can bias their understanding of the FRB population. This work has set the stage for the next chapter in the FRB field, where studying hundreds of host galaxies will help astronomers uncover the origins of these bursts and probe the structure of our Universe.

This week at TSI, we are thrilled to host Prof. Pratika Dayal from CITA at the University of Toronto.

Pratika’s research explores how the very first galaxies emerged in the first billion years of cosmic history, ushering in the end of the cosmic dark ages and driving the reionization of the Universe. Using groundbreaking observations from JWST, her work confronts surprising new discoveries, including the existence of massive black holes astonishingly early in cosmic time. These insights are reshaping our understanding of galaxy formation, dark matter models, and the future of gravitational-wave astronomy in the LISA era.

👉 Join us this Tuesday, December 2nd at 15:30 in the R.E. Bell Conference Room (ER Physics 103)

This week at TSI, we are excited to host Dr. Jamila Taaki, Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Michigan.

Jamila’s work uses astrometry to map stellar surfaces, helping disentangle starspot noise from exoplanet signals. Her approach brings us closer to detecting Earth-mass planets around sun-like stars!

This week at TSI, we are excited to host Prof. Mark Devlin from University of Pennsylvania.

Mark specializes in experimental cosmology leading the field of millimeter and sub-millimeter astronomy to map the cosmos. Join tomorrow to hear about mapping millimeter-wave sky using next generation CMB instruments such as Simons Observatory and how they will probe the origin and evolution of the Universe.

👉 Get to know Mark! Swipe to read our Q&A with him.

This week at TSI, we were excited to host Dr. Genevieve Schroeder, Postdoctoral Researcher at Cornell University.

Genevieve’s work uses radio observations to uncover the origins and environments of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) some of the most energetic explosions in the universe.

Are you interested in the mysteries of our planet and beyond? As part of Science Literacy Week , McGill Physics Outreach & TSI Outreach are joining forces to host “From Sea to space: An Exploration Mini-Fair”. Join us on Sat., Oct 4, 2025 between 10 pm to 4 pm in the Rutherford Physics Building on the McGill campus for hands-on activities and demos about gravity, life on other planets, energy, planetary systems, and more! Activities are geared towards kids ages 5 -12, but younger and older siblings (and parents!) are welcome.

Activities will be delivered in English, but we will have volunteers who can answer questions in French. Written materials and instructions will be available in French as well.

When: Saturday, Oct 4, 2025 | 10 am - 4pm
Where: Rutherford Physics Building, McGill University (3600 Rue University)
Register: https://forms.office.com/r/Uh2WgCdhV6

Quand: Samedi 4 octobre, 2025 | 10h - 16h
