As the economic relationship between Canada and the US becomes more uncertain, Prime Minister Mark Carney prepares to welcome investors to the first Canada Investment Summit in Toronto next week. Sebastien Betermier, Associate Professor of Finance, says that bringing in international investors requires a discussion on what Canada is willing to privatize. Opportunities exist for Canadian pension funds abroad, for example, but similar investments are unavailable at home. https://www.mcgill.ca/x/5RZ

As U.S. tariffs disrupt supply chains, Schwartz’s Deli has switched to Fleischer’s, a Quebec-made black cherry soda. McGill Desautels professor Saibal Ray explains how rising aluminum costs threaten niche beverages with narrow margins. The move highlights how trade pressures are encouraging businesses and consumers to support locally produced goods. https://www.mcgill.ca/x/5Eq

Many companies are shifting away from artificial dyes and going colourless to avoid more costly and perishable natural tints. McGill Desautels Professor Yu Ma explains that this change could go in two directions. While taking away colour may lose the "punch in attracting people's attention," Ma suggests that this shift could draw in more health-conscious consumers if marketed as authentic and natural. Whether or not these products can stay on the shelves will depend on if the perceived health benefits outweigh sensory expectations. https://www.mcgill.ca/x/5Eb

Renewed trade tensions are prompting Canadian businesses to rethink their supply chains. McGill Desautels Professor Saibal Ray explains why strengthening domestic production and internal capabilities is essential, even if Canada and the United States reach an agreement. Building more resilient supply networks will take time, but the need is increasingly clear. https://www.mcgill.ca/x/5ET

RBC, Scotiabank, TD, National Bank and Manulife have all tightened employee trading policies as prediction markets arrive in Canada through CIRO-authorized platforms like Wealthsimple Predict. Associate professor Patrick Augustin, who holds the Canada Research Chair in Macrofinance and Derivatives, praises the move: financial institutions "channel financial flows from left to right, and that comes with information,” Augustin said." making clear rules against insider trading and conflicts of interest a proactive, not reactive, step. https://www.mcgill.ca/x/5Lw

The threat of U.S. tariffs has become reality, and Ottawa has now responded in kind: Canada's retaliatory tariffs, covering more than 700 American products from steel to dairy to lumber, are set to take effect in September. Professor Saibal Ray says the escalation reinforces the deeper lesson — that reducing long-term dependence on the U.S. through stronger ties in Asia and other markets is what will actually protect Canada's economy over time. "Ottawa has already started trying to diversify Canada's trade relationships, which should help over the longer term," Ray said.. https://www.mcgill.ca/x/5Li

More than 80 per cent of Rwanda's workforce is informal and until recently, largely locked out of retirement savings. Associate professor Sebastien Betermier breaks down how the Ejo Heza program is changing that: flexible, mobile-based contributions built for income volatility, insurance benefits, emergency withdrawals and government-backed credibility. With 4.8 million members enrolled, it's emerging as a potential blueprint for inclusive retirement systems worldwide. https://www.mcgill.ca/x/5L3
