Incorporating Indigenous cultural activities into the classroom is easier when teachers experience them firsthand. Students in VIU’s Dispersed Teacher Education program got this hands-on experience during their residency at VIU’s Nanaimo campus this August. Under the supervision of Education Professor Hayden Kenneth Taylor, students gathered at Shq’apthut to learn drum making, floral beading and soapstone carving, allowing them to incorporate these activities into their own classrooms with confidence.

The Dispersed Teacher Education program supports people in rural and remote areas in completing teacher training without needing to relocate. Most of the program is delivered online, with practicums in local school districts or nearby towns. Twice a year, students gather for two short in-person residencies.

Wearable trackers, performance apps and other digital tools are changing the way young athletes experience sport.

VIU researcher Dr. Jordan Herbison is studying how this technology affects youth development, team dynamics and mental health. His goal is to help parents and coaches use these tools in ways that support young athletes, both on and off the field.

A new collaboration is advancing First Nations-led salmon stewardship.

VIU researcher Dr. Ben Sutherland is partnering with Candace Picco of the Ha’oom Fisheries Society to develop open-source genetic analysis tools that support First Nations priorities in fisheries management. The multi-year project will help build capacity for independent data access and management, and support more timely genetic results.

The project has secured funding for the next three years from the First Nations Fisheries Council’s Indigenous Stewardship Fund, the Pacific Salmon Foundation and Genome British Columbia.
