Summer projects, hands-on learning and plenty of innovation! 🛠️
Last week, our Technical Services Assistants showcased the projects they worked on throughout the summer. Alongside supporting the teaching and research needs of the summer semester, these students had the opportunity to innovate, build and get hands-on experience using our Engineering Design Studio.
Through their projects, they expanded their knowledge of the materials, tools and machines available to them—and gained valuable skills they can carry forward into their studies and future careers.

Check out what they created!

FEAS is launching a faculty-wide sticker design competition with two ways to win!

Category 1: The Faculty-Wide Design (Representing all of us!)
Category 2: The Program Pride Design (One winner for each program!)

We want to see the puns, the blueprints, and the inside jokes that make FEAS unique.

Deadline: August 21st, 11:59 p.m.
Submissions: Link in bio.

The winner of each category will have their design be professionally printed and distributed across the faculty.

Friday, July 31, is the last day to apply for a change of program for the fall semester. Finished first year and realized coding is super cool and Software is the way to go? Really want to do that Aerospace Specialization, but you aren’t in Mechanical? Whatever move is best for you, the deadline to change is coming up soon!

Visit MyOntarioTech and select Undergraduate Students. Expand the My Academics section and locate the Change of program and readmission link listed under the Enrolment section. Select the appropriate application.

Don’t forget, your Academic Advisors are here to help or talk through your options.

Happy World Asteroid Day!
This is a depiction of the asteroid Psyche, which lies in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter

Behind every asteroid tracking mission, spacecraft, and satellite is a team of aerospace engineers making space exploration possible. Our Aerospace specialization gives you a strong foundation in the science and technology of flight, exploring aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, flight dynamics, materials, and control systems while developing the skills to help design the aircraft and spacecraft of tomorrow.

This specialization is for students in the Mechanical Engineering program.

On June 17, 2026, students and teachers from Saltus Academy, Bermuda visited Ontario Tech University for a Sailboat Design Challenge that combined engineering theory with hands-on learning.

The day began with a lecture by Dr. Sharman Perera, who introduced students to the principles of aerodynamics and hydrodynamics and explained how these concepts influence sailboat design and performance. Dr. Jennifer McKellar then provided an overview of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and the Department of Energy and Nuclear Engineering, highlighting the educational opportunities available to future engineers.

Students then worked in teams to design and build model sailboats before testing their creations in Ontario Tech University’s unique Wind Chamber facility. Engineering Lab Specialist Robert Ulrich helped conduct the competition and guided students through the testing process, allowing them to evaluate the speed, stability, and overall performance of their designs under simulated wind and water conditions.

The challenge provided an exciting opportunity for students to apply engineering concepts in a practical setting while developing teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Most importantly, they learned by doing—and had fun doing it.

A special thank you to Mandy Furnis from the Office of the Registrar for coordinating this visit and helping make the event possible. Events like these play an important role in inspiring the next generation of engineers and innovators.

Meet Izzy! One of our incredible Ontario Tech Engineering alumni!

After earning a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechatronics Engineering and a Master of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering, she has since built an exciting career in automation and innovation.

Her master's thesis, “Proof of Concept for Computer Vision-Based Failure Detection and Print Resumption in Fused Filament Additive Manufacturing”, explored how computer vision can allow for recovery of a 3D print after an abrupt failure, improving the reliability of 3D printing processes.

Following graduation, she worked as an Automation Engineer at Caterpillar (CAT), developing autonomous navigation and operation systems for mining equipment. Today, she is a Research & Development Engineer at ACE, where she helps test and validate innovative ideas.

Outside of her professional work, she continues to make an impact in the STEM community as a FIRST Robotics alumni who has served as the Volunteer Coordinator for the Durham College FIRST Robotics Competition event for the past three years, helping create meaningful experiences for students and inspiring the next generation of engineers and innovators.

We're proud to celebrate alumni like her who are advancing technology, leading with purpose, and giving back to their communities.
