Every spring, the Faculty of Science hosts the Durham Regional Science Fair, coordinated by our very own Professor Mary Olaveson.

This year, Mary, Stephanie Mavilla (Chief Judge), and Ken Wilson (Dean of Science) were proud to present the four high school finalists with the opportunity to travel to Edmonton to compete in the Canada-Wide Science Fair.

The finalists are...
🏆Rayyan Rajani, for his project "Silent Aspiration Detector"
🏆Mayukh Manohar and Tanish Patel, for their project "SENSE Using FSRs to Help Level I and II GMFCS of Cerebral Palsy"
🏆Olivia Hazelwood, for her project "Metabolic Priming of Hordeum vulgare for Enhanced Feed Efficiency"

Where do our Chemistry graduates go? On April 1, 2026, we welcomed back two of our former students to find out!

Dr. Holly Fruehwald joined Ontario Tech University as an undergraduate Chemistry student and stayed on to complete her PhD in Materials Science. Currently, she is a Tenure Track Assistant Professor at Wilfrid Laurier University!

Mason Sullivan also earned his BSc in Chemistry at Ontario Tech before completing his MSc degree here in Materials Science. Now, Mason is a Battery Scientist at AVL in Windsor!

Our latest research, AnnotateGPT, has been accepted to CHI 2026 in Barcelona! Providing high-quality writing feedback is exhausting. We built AnnotateGPT to turn digital pen strokes into interactive "clues" that AI agents use to assist with complex essay grading.

The highlights:
🔹AI-Powered Ink: Translates scribbles and underlines into actionable feedback intent.
🔹Teacher-in-the-Loop: Educators move from manual writing to strategic "curators."
