Algonquin College receives investment from Research Institute for Aging to expand Living Classroom partnership at Perley Health

As students return to campus and begin a new academic year, Algonquin College is celebrating a $325,000 investment from the Government of Ontario Ministry of Long-Term Care that will expand the successful Living Classroom model and create more opportunities for future nurses to gain hands-on experience before entering the workforce.

Algonquin College has always had deep ties to the Anishinàbe Algonquin Peoples, beginning with the school’s namesake and a multi-pronged approach to Truth, Reconciliation and Indigenization woven into campus life, events and corporate elements.

Ahead of Sept. 30, which is also colloquially known as Orange Shirt Day, Anita Tenasco, Director, Indigenous Initiatives at Algonquin College, sat down for an important conversation with Duran Tolley, a current student and Mamidosewin Centre student navigator, reflecting on Indigenization at the College through the learners’ lens.

Aspire AC at Algonquin College is a unique student support program that provides personalized guidance from the moment a prospective student begins exploring college options through to graduation and beyond.

For Tracy Dupuis, returning to school at 36 was exciting, but it also came with plenty of questions. As a mother of two who had been out of school for years, she wasn’t sure where to begin, how to navigate the application process or how she would manage the financial side of going back to school.

What she did know was that she wanted to take the next step. With support from Aspire AC, that step became possible.
