This week, we said thank you to Mary McGuire for her years of dedication to teaching generations of journalists, and celebrated the extension and expansion of an internship program connecting Carleton journalism students to CBC North internships. Students got to interview and meet CBC President Marie-Philippe Bouchard, CBC News general manager and editor-in-chief Brodie Fenlon, and His Excellency Whit Fraser, the spouse of Governor General Mary Simon and a longtime CBC broadcaster in the North and in Ottawa.

The Mary McGuire Journalism Internship Travel Fund was established by Mary in 2020 and has supported several summer internships — including Tamara Merritt’s. Tamara remains in Yellowknife and filmed an on-the-ground video message shared during this week’s event. You can watch the whole celebration and donate to the fund at carleton.ca/sjc/

Congratulations to the FIRST-EVER winners of the Canadian Student Journalism Award — Community Driven Project of the Year! Last winter, students in Reporting in Indigenous Communities investigated the impacts of climate change within Indigenous communities.

Announcing the awards, J-Schools Canada/Écoles-J Canada writes, “the project’s strengths lie in its compelling presentation, journalistic integrity, and significant public relevance, amplifying voices and environmental issues often overlooked in mainstream media. The students’ reporting amplified Indigenous voices and environmental perspectives through video, photography, and digital storytelling, demonstrating innovation, collaboration, and deep respect for community-driven journalism.”

You can find the special project on And is teaching this course —JOUR 4313/5313 — again in January.

Carleton’s own, Abyssinia Abebe (@ aby.xyz), won the Emerging BIPOC Student Leader in the 2025 Canadian Student Journalism Awards. Abyssinia’s submission stood out for the exceptional quality of her personal essay and her clear demonstration of leadership within her community.

“Receiving the Emerging BIPOC Journalism Leader Award is a humbling reminder of why I fell in love with journalism – the privilege of listening and holding space for a wide range of perspectives,” Abyssinia says. “I’m grateful for the privilege to hear and share stories that are often times overlooked, distorted, or simply absent from our newspapers. This recognition encourages me, more than ever, to approach each story with care, curiosity, empathy and most importantly, respect.”

Congratulations to Abyssinia!
