Hey everyone! It’s Jenna, your IJM Pres here to get y’all excited about the IJM UOTTAWA EXEC APPLICATIONS that are due tomorrow!
Q: why is an IJM club important at uOttawa?
As someone who had done their own learning about modern slavery, in my first year of university I looked for an anti slavery club to join. There were none. Then, it became aware to me that modern slavery isn’t talked about much in academia. As an International Development student, I saw that no professor had mentioned forced labour in any of my first year global studies, economics or politics classes. Throughout my four years, I only had 2 or 3 professors mention this global injustice, despite the fact that forms of forced labour are often effects of MANY of the systems that we talk about in class (international trade, capitalism, all that jazz). Justice systems, and how they are being abused by some to oppress others into forced labour, isn’t really talked about in development studies at uOttawa. So because of the lack of attention that the student body gives this global issue, as well as the little study of it in academia, it is SUPER important that IJM uOttawa exists to raise awareness of, fundraise for, and pray for the work of IJM.
More generally, IJM campus chapters at universities are SO important because they involve students in the mission of IJM. We spend our days learning at university, but clubs that promote involvement through event planning and fundraising against modern slavery tap into a different kind of learning. When it comes to development or justice work, school can also be hecka cynical sometimes, and so the presence of a club like IJM on campuses can work to bring hope to students while also inviting them into a mission far greater than themselves. By preaching the God sustained work of IJM on campus, students can be filled with greater vision as to what God can do in their lives and communities.
If you haven’t already, I encourage you to apply to be on the IJM 2021/2022 Exec team. It has truly been the highlight of my undergrad. Link: https://forms.gle/F4BTWt89FcS5opiq7
