Our students get the opportunity to engage in local real-world challenges!

Students from the Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism at Carleton University took on a project in the 3rd year conservation studio exploring how part of the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus could be reimagined for the future - considering design, sustainability, and community impact.

As highlighted on CBC Ottawa Morning, this work connects directly with ongoing conversations about the redevelopment of the Civic Campus. It is one of the most significant healthcare infrastructure projects in the region as these building have been part of the Ottawa landscape since the 1920's.

The discussion featured Matt Lemay from the Civic Hospital Neighbourhood Association, alongside ASAU students Lilly Zegerius and Lauren DiFruscio from the conservation and sustainability stream.

It’s inspiring to see students contributing thoughtful ideas to such an important civic project while bringing fresh perspectives to how healthcare environments can better serve both people and place.

Over the past 10 years, Professor Federica Goffi’s research has focused on the notion of architecture in conversion through the work of Carlo Scarpa, an important 20th-century Italian architect and designer known for his ability to reimagine museums and public spaces.

Her latest book, Architecture in Conversion and the Work of Carlo Scarpa, represents the culmination of this research, which includes interviews with collaborators and studying his drawings and built work in Venice, Verona, Treviso, Possagno, Altivole, and Palermo, Italy.

The book, illustrated by Carlo Scarpa’s (1906-1978) drawings and new photography by Prakash Patel, provides insight into Scarpa’s approach to conversion in architecture: more than simply a change of use, but about a sense of place and the evolution of building, sites, and culture over time.

Published in December 2025 by Lund Humphries, the book will be available through Carleton University’s MacOdrum Library, and also at Lund Humphries.

Save the date! Forum Lecture: Spirals and Yuizarix will take place on Monday, January 19 at 6:00 p.m. at the Architecture Building at Carleton University. The speakers are Cruz Garcia, Nathalie Frankowski, and daughter Ema Yuizarix of WAI Architecture Think Tank.

In this loudreading performance, WAI Architecture Think Tank assembles an audiovisual collage of ancestral knowledge, networks of solidarity, biographical notes, fields of action, educational platforms, anti-colonial counterpropaganda, anti-hegemonic publishing, and subversive storytelling.

Cruz Garcia is a Puerto Rican designer, artist, curator, educator, author, and theorist. Nathalie Frankowski is a French designer, artist, curator, educator, author, and poet.

Currently, they are Associate Professors at the School of Architecture at Iowa State University. They are former faculty of the Master of Science in Advanced Architecture Design at Columbia University GSAPP.

The Vanier Hub, designed and built by the Architecture Action Lab at Carleton University to bring people together, officially opened on November 20 with a community celebration.

“This has become a new, permanent piece of architecture for the Vanier community to call theirs, and we are so happy to have been able to co-design this project with them,” says Associate Professor Menna Agha, director of the Action Lab.

The site is a 40-by-29-metre former parking lot at the corner of Montreal Road and Marier Avenue. It now provides a stage for performances, spaces for outdoor cooking, a playground, a nine-metre-long table for sharing, and a variety of places for relaxation and socializing.

All outdoors, the diverse elements are held together by the idea of a house. A roof truss spanning part of the site gives a sense of enclosure. The area is watched over by a life-sized plywood carving of a bear. Representing protection, the bear was a non-negotiable element for Indigenous Elders who participated in the design process.

“The whole concept was that we are going to build a public house here that brings everybody together,” says Dr. Agha. “The concept was home.”

Built from May to November, the project brought together over 150 volunteers who contributed more than 12,000 hours of work.

Associate Professor Sheryl Boyle is the lead author on a new book, Sense-Making: New Sensory Methods for Exploring the Past and Imagining Possible Futures, published in 2025 by Routledge.

“This writing contributes new research into the junction between making and materiality and their relationship to people, place, and time,” she says.

Dr. Boyle is the director of the Carleton Sensory Architecture & Liminal Technology (CSALT) lab at the Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism, where she supervises research on immersive materials and innovative design and assembly processes.

“After two decades of questioning the materials and methods of contemporary and historic building in my courses at Carleton, including Recycling Architecture, the exercises in Sense-Making came out of an interest in digging deep, sometimes literally, into materials and their meaning,” she says.

The book is a distillation of her PhD in the Humanities at Concordia University, which she completed in 2021 while teaching full-time at Carleton University and serving as director of the school for five years.

The book’s co-authors are David Howes, a professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and co-director of the Centre for Sensory Studies at Concordia University, and Genevieve Collins, who is completing a PhD in social anthropology with visual media from the University of Manchester, UK.

Since 2022, master’s students at the Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism have been able to graduate with a Master of Architecture with a Collaborative Specialization in Climate Change.

“I don’t think we can ignore how deeply implicated our discipline is in the climate crisis, purely in terms of the material choices that we make and the energy that we consume through our buildings,” said Associate Professor Lisa Moffitt, who coordinates graduate studies at the school.

Architecture is one of 26 programs at Carleton University that can add a specialization in climate change to the degree by participating in a collaboration between the humanities, sciences, engineering, business, and public policy.

“It’s been an amazing experience,” said architecture student Madison Bolyea. “Speaking with people with different knowledge bases has expanded the way I see the world and design and possibilities.”

For Master of Architecture students, this means taking two classes in climate change as approved electives, and their thesis must be related to climate change.

“While I’m learning the tools and methods of architecture, it’s a great time to also think about adaptation and how we’re going to move forward,” adds thesis student Keegan Metheringham.

About 100 people attended yesterday’s official opening of the Vanier Hub, a space for community gathering, play, and culture in Vanier. The project was designed and built by architecture students and volunteers with the Architecture Action Lab at the Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism.

“We are proud to mark this as the Architecture Action Lab’s third design-build project, created in the spirit of community service and spatial justice,” said Associate Professor Menna Agha, the director of Action Lab.

“I’m so proud of my students and how they did this and never wavered.”

Among the speakers was Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe. “This is absolutely beautiful, and this is what community is all about,” he said.
