Congratulations to UNBC Acquisitions Librarian Heather Empey, recipient of a 2026 University Excellence in Professional Practice, Mentorship or Stewardship Award!

Through her leadership, Empey has created lasting institutional infrastructure that has strengthened fiscal and environmental practices at UNBC and beyond.

Her work has had tangible impacts across the University community, including helping faculty members avoid more than $330,000 in publication costs between 2022 and 2025 and diverting more than 2,100 kilograms of materials from landfill.

Empey’s expertise has also been sought by institutions across Canada, reflecting the broad impact of her contributions to librarianship.

Librarian contributions are foundational to teaching and learning in academia. The award recognizes Empey's exceptional efforts in advancing sustainable practices, supporting research and creating benefits that extend from UNBC to the wider academic community.

Move-in day means new beginnings.

Families, friends and UNBC community members pitched in to help new and returning students move into residence on Thursday, the first of two move-in days.

With the Neyoh and Keyoh buildings both full this year, more than 500 students are settling into their new on-campus home and getting ready for orientation on Tuesday and their first day of classes on Wednesday.

No one at UNBC had to say it has one of the most beautiful campuses in Canada; 1,600 students said it instead!

This summer Academica asked students from across Canada to vote on the most beautiful campus in the country. Each participating university, college or institute was represented by one photo, and the students weren't given the names of the schools in the picture.

A stunning snow covered photo of UNBC's Prince George campus placed second in the voting, just three votes out of first!

The new Ancient Forest/Chun T’oh Whudujut Interpretive Centre tells the story of the Lheidli T'enneh and their connection to the unique inland temperate rainforest.

At a special opening event on Thursday, Lheidli T’enneh Chief Dolleen Logan told those gathered that the ancient forest is a special place that demonstrates that economic opportunity and protecting the land don't need to be opposing ideas.

Over the years, UNBC researchers have played a key role in identifying the ecological significance of the site. It began with Dave Radies coming across the giant western redcedars while conducting research into lichen as a graduate student during the 2000s (https://www.unbc.ca/releases/2007/ancient-forest) and continued with the discovery of a rare orchid (https://www.unbc.ca/newsroom/unbc-stories/unbc-researchers-uncover-rare-species-new-ancient-forest/chun-toh-whudujut-provincial-park).

The centre is expected to open to the public in the spring of 2027.
