Earlier this summer, Chief Hugh Akagi, our marine team and our colleague Matt Abbott from the Conservation Council of New Brunswick were asked to participate in a panel hosted by Greenhorns in Lubec, Maine, to share some marine concerns from the Peskotomuhkati Nation at Skutik and staff at the Passamaquoddy Recognition Group. We also shared some initiatives that bring us hope including the collaborative Skutik River restoration, and the need to move this collaborative momentum to the Bay to restore habitats and change detrimental policies that ignore the rights of Indigenous peoples. Chief Hugh also featured some of his favourite books that made a huge impact, including Silent Spring, by Rachel Carson, from Maine.

🐢Have you been seeing lots of turtles recently?

Our Cihkonaqc (turtle) Protection Project aims to track where turtles are nesting along roadsides to identify mortality hotspots.

Our QR code opens to a quick Google Form to report any sightings of turtles near roads, so we can better understand where they need help!

The Passamaquoddy Recognition Group Inc. (PRGI) is looking to hire a Forester who will work with the
lands team to conduct field assessment and forest management practices for the Skutik Indigenous
Protected and Cultural Area (IPCA). The Skutik IPCA aims to protect land along the Skutik (St. Croix) River
in New Brunswick for the next seven generations and beyond. The Forester will gain conservation-based
work experience in both an open office environment and in the field. They will learn how to work in
conservation from an indigenous viewpoint.

We are so grateful for the outpouring of community support and love for our Watersheds, that we are all a part of, over the weekend. Kci'woliwon for all who made this event possible. Big thanks to Cipelahq Ehpicik (Thunderbird Women) for opening us up in the best way on Saturday, and the gorgeous closing, and to Eastport Arts Center for being our hosts.
