Today is International Overdose Awareness Day, the world's largest campaign to end overdose. We remember every life lost to overdose, parents, siblings, children, friends, neighbours, and clients. We hold space for the grief carried by loved ones and the ongoing pain felt by communities across the country.

As social workers, we stand for approaches that reduce harm and uphold people’s rights. We meet people with compassion. We listen without judgment. And we continue to stand alongside those impacted by the toxic drug crisis in impacted by the toxic drug crisis to push for systems that support, not punish

Today, and every day, we say:
You are not alone.
Your life matters.
Everyone is worthy of affirming and judgement-free care.

Last night, Cohort 3 (and a few profs!!!) got together for bowling before heading back to class & full-time practicum in just 2 short weeks 🎳😁

We had so much fun, we missed the ones who couldn’t make it! Looking forward to our next class get together ✨

Today is .

On August 19, we honour the courage and commitment of humanitarian workers around the world those who step into crisis, displacement, and disaster to stand with people when they need it most, and those who have lost their lives in service.

Social workers are part of this global humanitarian community on the front lines of crisis response, providing trauma-informed care, advocating for the displaced and dispossessed, and ensuring that dignity is upheld even in the most devastating circumstances.

On Saturday, some of our cohort participated in the pride parade in Sydney. The best time was had advocating, supporting, dancing, and singing with one another and all the lovely individuals who came to watch the parade & walk alongside us! 🏳️‍🌈

Today is Emancipation Day. 🕊️

It marks the abolition of slavery across the British Empire in 1834. But it's also a call to action. Anti-Black racism didn't end with abolition; it lives in the systems social workers work within every day, from child welfare to health care, housing, and justice.

For social workers, confronting it isn't separate from our practice. It is our practice. The CASW Code of Ethics calls on us to pursue social justice and challenge oppression, and Emancipation Day is a reminder that work is far from finished.

CASW honours the contributions of Black Canadians by advocating for policies that dismantle systemic inequities, supporting Black-led movements and organizations, and committing to meaningful action toward racial justice in our communities.

On this , the UN continues to call for collective, coordinated action to dismantle the organized criminal networks fuelling human trafficking worldwide and social workers are part of that response.

Human trafficking is not an isolated crime. It is sustained by systemic inequalities, exploitation, and the marginalization of those already pushed to the edges of society.
In Canada, Black and Indigenous women, children, 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, newcomers, and other equity-denied communities continue to bear a disproportionate burden of trafficking and exploitation harms realities that are often hidden in plain sight across all sectors and communities.

Social workers are on the front lines of prevention, recognition, and survivor-centred response. Our role is not only to identify the signs it is to challenge the structural conditions that make people vulnerable in the first place.

On Tuesday, cohort 3 had the privilege of showcasing our own research at our Photovoice Gallery Exhibition to close out our Community Engaged Research class with Dr.Conley! ✨💚🧡

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, asked questions, and showed interest in our research. It means so much to us to be able to share this with the community!

Dr.Conley, thank you for a great semester of learning, fun, (and cheese!) 😂

You have dedicated your time to teaching us that research isn’t so scary and how important it is within the work we will do. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us and providing our class with the opportunity to share what we’ve learned. We are forever grateful! ❤️

Cohort 3 has officially finished classes this week for term 3! We are looking forward to a well deserved break before we give it one more go. 💛

Today is Day.
We pause to honour the lives lost to toxic drug poisoning people who were more than a statistic. They were family members, friends, colleagues, and community members whose lives mattered.
The toxic drug supply crisis in Canada continues to claim lives that could be saved. This day is a reminder that stigma kills and that compassionate, harm reduction-centred policy saves lives.
CASW calls on social workers to continue advocating for non-judgmental, dignity-affirming care; to challenge criminalization and systemic barriers to treatment; and to support survivors and communities most impacted by this ongoing public health emergency.
