Emotion dysregulation is a common symptom of BPD, but what exactly does it mean? Turns out it’s quite multifaceted! Let's break it down.

Emotion dysregulation specifically refers to abnormal emotion processes and difficulties regulating them (Linehan, 1993). Abnormal emotion processes include:

1. Heightened emotion sensitivity (i.e., lower threshold for emotion)

2. Heightened emotion reactivity (i.e., greater increase in emotion following a stressor)

3. Slow return to baseline (i.e., slower decreases in emotion following a stressor)

Individuals who struggle with emotion dysregulation do not necessarily experience all features - this is where good assessment comes in! When we assess for all of these features, we can better tailor treatment strategies to an individual's specific needs.
