Fifty years. One JD/MBA community.

Alumni, faculty and partners gathered at TD Terrace to celebrate 50 years of JD/MBA (LLB/MBA) graduates and the first year of the Hennick JD/MBA program, a joint program with the Schulich School of Business.

Over five decades, the program has shaped leaders across law and business.

Thank you to Chancellor Kathleen Taylor (JD/MBA ’84), President Lisa Philipps (LLM ’92) and Jay and Barbara Hennick for their leadership and support, and to the graduates who joined us to mark this milestone.

We look forward to what comes next.

Osgoode recently welcomed back alumnus Dionysios “Dennis” Apostolides (LLB ’83) and his wife, Sophia Voumvakis, 43 years after Dennis first walked the halls as a bursary‑supported student.

That support made law school possible. Today, Dennis and Sophia are paying it forward through a future bequest and a bursary in Dennis’ name, helping ensure JD students with financial need, particularly those interested in Family or Indigenous Law, have the same opportunity to succeed.

What does bankruptcy law reveal about how societies allocate risk?

At Osgoode Hall Law School, Debt’s Grip: Risk and Consumer Bankruptcy, organized by Professor Stephanie Ben Ishai, brought together scholars and judges from Canada, the US and the UK to examine financial precarity, household debt and the limits of insolvency law.

Across the discussions, one theme surfaced: the kinds of debt people carry are not evenly distributed. Housing costs, student loans and medical expenses shape who absorbs economic shock and how.

Drawing on more than a decade of Consumer Bankruptcy Project data, presenters showed how bankruptcy systems often function as a substitute for broader social policy — offering a window into how institutions assign risk and to whom.
