🩺 AI scribes can reduce the time physicians spend documenting patient visits by 69.1% during simulated primary care appointments, according to new research out of U of T Engineering.

The study, led by LaShawn Murray (MIE PhD Candidate), involved nine physicians completing simulated patient encounters both with and without the use of the AI scribes, which recorded audio and used it to generate structured, regulatory-compliant clinical notes for a patient’s medical chart.

They found that when the scribes were in use, the doctors spent significantly less time documenting — and researchers noted an unexpected change in how some physicians kept track of their thoughts during appointments.

🌿 World-renowned AI and ecology researcher Professor Tanya Berger-Wolf is coming to U of T Engineering.

A self-described computational ecologist, Berger-Wolf will join the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at U of T in summer 2027, where she'll take up the Eddie Goldenberg Research Chair of Canada in AI for Nature.

She currently leads the Imageomics Institute at The Ohio State University, where her team built BioCLIP, an AI model trained on more than 210 million images representing roughly half of all named plant, fungal and animal species.

"If we want to predict the state of ecosystems, and how they are going to respond to the pressures that we humans are putting on them, we need to get people from engineering, computing, biology, natural resources, geography and social sciences together," says Berger-Wolf. "The survival of our own species depends on solving these challenges."

🏅 Congratulations to MIE professor and U of T Engineering Dean Emerita Cristina Amon on being elected a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.

As Dean from 2006 to 2019, Amon built interdisciplinary pathways connecting engineering innovation with clinical impact. A recognized leader in computational fluid dynamics and biomedical modelling, her research spans predicting endovascular surgical outcomes to tissue engineering for tracheas, lungs and hearts.

She’s now one of very few academics elected to all three of Canada’s national academies, joining University Professor Molly Shoichet (ChemE, BME) and Professors Milica Radisic (ChemE, BME) and Yu Sun (MIE).
