University of Toronto researchers have shown that free, widely available AI models can power a computer worm that could make any device connected to the internet a potential target.

Built as a proof-of-concept in a secure lab, the work from U of T Engineering professor Nicolas Papernot (ECE) and his collaborators at the CleverHans Lab and Vector Institute shows that this kind of attack no longer takes cutting-edge AI or deep pockets, and that current defences are not yet ready for it.

Papernot's team shared the findings with national science, security and defence bodies before going public and is already developing countermeasures.

"We can no longer afford to hit 'ignore' on software updates," says Papernot. "Every door you close is one less way in, so it's worth taking a few minutes to reboot."

🏳️‍🌈 "The world is wide enough to accept all nerdy, gay, genderfluid, musical, Filipino-Canadian sides of me at once."

To mark the start of , we're sharing a special Q&A with 's Angelico Obille (BME PhD 2T6).

Sometimes, Obille is a biomedical engineering researcher studying proteins secreted by freshwater quagga mussels in hopes of developing new ways to close wounds after surgery.

Other times, they transform into Kwaga Musselle, a fabulous drag entertainer and creative science communicator, raising visibility and fostering connection among 2SLGBTQ+ people in STEM.

In the Q&A, Obille talks about the mental health supports they leaned on during their PhD, the LGBTQ+ in STEM community that helped them thrive and the advice they'd give others going through something similar.

"By surrounding myself with folks who live unapologetically whole, I learned that I don't need to shrink one part of myself for another to thrive."

🎓 Celebrating Our Grads: Meet Aarabhi Krishnakumar (MechE 2T5 + PEY). Across her degree, she took on five internships — among them a year with the BWT Alpine Formula One Team in Oxford, England.

Her other roles spanned Canada Post, Bombardier Aerospace, Lockheed Martin and the Canadian Space Agency, taking her from mail sorting systems to private jets to Canada's naval ships. The back-to-back placements at Bombardier and Lockheed Martin counted as her PEY Co-op.

At Alpine, Aarabhi worked as a build and test intern, bridging the design and build teams, with a trip to Silverstone for the British Grand Prix.

Together, those internships helped land her a role as a process engineer at Tesla Toronto. Her new boss, a fan of the sport himself, told her it was the F1 experience that caught his eye.

🏆 Professor Robert Irish (ISTEP) has received the President's Teaching Award — the University of Toronto's highest honour for teaching excellence, educational innovation and educational leadership.

Irish arrived at U of T Engineering in 1995 to run a six-month pilot project on integrating communication into engineering. Thirty years later, the Engineering Communication Program he built is an international leader. He also spearheaded cornerstone courses like ESP and Praxis, and his textbooks are used across engineering programs in North America.

Congratulations, Professor Irish! 👏
