Our academic journal, Canadian Jewish Studies / Études juives canadiennes, and Text Matters: A Journal of Literature, Theory, and Culture, based at the University of Lodz, are pleased to announce a special collaboration showcasing new scholarship on Canadian Jewry and its transnational connections.

The partnership stems from a shared interest in amplifying original, comparative, and interdisciplinary research involving Canadian Jewish content to a global scholarly readership. Guest edited by literary scholar Norman Ravvin, contributions will be organized around several themes but divided up for publication between the two journals, which will each publish the material concurrently as special sections in autumn 2027. The guest editor, in consultation with editors at Text Matters and CJS / Éjc, will curate the special sections in both journals. Articles will appear in either journal, but not in both.

Possible avenues of inquiry include:

▶︎ Jewish responses to and participation in Canada’s changing identity over time, including such challenges as contemporary US-Canada relations
▶︎ Transnational or transatlantic links in the Canadian Jewish experience
▶︎ The legacies of European heritage among Canadian Jews
▶︎ Wartime connections between Canadian and European Jewry
▶︎ Canadian Jewish responses to nationalistic and isolationist sentiments across time and space
▶︎ Canadian multicultural ideals as they relate to Jewish themes
▶︎ Past or present relationships between Polish (or other Eastern European) and Canadian Jewish history and culture, heritage travel, or museums.
▶︎ The place of Polish (or other Eastern European) ancestry and family stories in contemporary Canadian Jewish lives.

Have you finished reading the spring 2026 volume of Canadian Jewish Studies / Études juives canadiennes?

This is our final post in a series exploring the articles in the spring 2026 volume of our scholarly journal. In the journal’s Translation section, Hongfei Liang translates two newspaper articles from Chinese to English in “History as a Bridge: Chinese-Jewish Community Dialogue in Canada.” Liang details efforts to build connections between Chinese and Jewish communities in Vancouver in the early 2000s.

We’re happy to share that one of the contributions to the spring 2026 volume of our scholarly journal, Canadian Jewish Studies / Études juives canadiennes, was written up in The Canadian Jewish News!

Lilach Marom’s article, “A Bug or a Feature? The Marginalization of Jewish Identity and Antisemitism in the EDI Landscape of Canadian Higher Education,” uses data from a national survey as well as interviews to show how Jewish identity and antisemitism has been marginalized in the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion policies and practices of universities in Canada. The study suggests that antisemitism is missing or marginalized in policies and that Jewish identity is only partially recognized.

The fourth and final week of exploring the spring 2026 volume of Canadian Jewish Studies / Études juives canadiennes has begun!

Today we look at Shlomo Gleibman’s article, “Writing Canadian Judaism through Q***r Migration.” Through literary works by David Bezmozgis, Brian Stein, and K. David Brody, Gleibman examines enduring questions of migration, identity, diversity, and multiculturalism. The article explores how immigration and migration shape the reclamation of traditional Jewish symbols within the contexts of Canadian Judaism, Jewish community, and gay male sexuality.

The Association for Canadian Jewish Studies is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of historian Frank Bialystok on August 13, 2026.

For decades Frank was one of our foremost scholars of Canadian Jewish history, a longtime lecturer at the University of Toronto, the author of Delayed Impact: The Holocaust and the Canadian Jewish Community (2000), Faces in the Crowd: The Jews of Canada (2022), and many articles and book chapters.

The ACJS awarded Frank its Louis Rosenberg Canadian Jewish Studies Distinguished Service Award in 2021. May his memory be a blessing.

As week 3 of exploring the spring 2026 volume of Canadian Jewish Studies / Études juives canadiennes comes to an end, we are highlighting Pierre Anctil’s article, “Defining Antisemitism in Francophone Canada: The Plamondon Trials of 1913–1914.”

Anctil uses the infamous Plamondon Libel Case and its 1913–1914 trials in Quebec City as a portal to better understand the intellectual sources of anti-Judaism that pervaded Catholic Quebec elites and to distinguish it from the intellectual trends swirling in Anglophone Canada around the same time.
